For every visit I try to find the local’s favourite Cafe with history, flair, ambiance and something special. Preferable it also has to be not the go-to tourist hotspot with long line ups and excessive prices. The Caffe San Marco is exactly that in Trieste. Situated a few minutes walk out of the downtown core it is easily reached by foot (walk along the pedestrian street XX of September and then walk one block over). It has been in operation since 1914 and it oozes historic context and events. The decoration and wall paintings make it one of the most unique Caffès I have been too and it containing a bookstore within one of the two main wings is yet another attraction in itself. I absolutely loved sipping the delicious cafe macchiato and indulging in an incredible Tiramisu while reviewing a book summarizing and describing Caffe San Marco’s history, existence and wall art. What a special place this is! This will be one of my favourite spots to visit in future Trieste stays.

(New) Poor Customer Service Reply. As someone who works in service this is quite embarrassing to respond to a customer in such a rude manner. I had been told to visit San Marco for ages! I'd heard amazing reviews from my friends, so last Sunday we thought lets go in and get warm, have a coffee and play some board games. Initially we went to the bar to place our order, no one met us at the door to a table, instead we approached the bar staff, we were immediatly told to sit and wait for table service anywhere.. no care given.. The very slow service began, we waited 20 minutes before being served Menus then another 20 before they took our order. Overall the coffee was average and cold when it arrived, the shelves were messy and dusty.

As they say when in Rome yet in this case it’s Trieste and what a surprise this was . Located off one of the main roads in Trieste is this spectacular cafe originating from 1914. It has such an old time charm and seats surely about 100 people if not more . Pick your timing as there is always a queue to get a seat in one of their booths or Parisian style tables. A great cafe/ bar for coffee , gelato , cake or an aperitif. This bar buzzes with Italian chatter from a nearby table and the sound of jazz playing in the background . We drank Aperol spritzers to live like the Italians do for at least an hour. Go sit and experience the energy - you won’t want to leave this place, that I can promise you .

The atmosphere of this cafe is its saving grace. I was here about a week ago and I left very disappointed. I was looking forward to a cafe with a bookshop within it. The staff were almost rude, when I asked a question about where I could sit they just pointed at a sign that said table service only. So I sat myself at a clean table near others and then was told I should have gone and found myself a menu myself. The food and drinks are alright, not worth the money or the time spent waiting for them. I had planned to have a few cups of coffee there and perhaps even stay for lunch, but I left as soon as I was finished my first one, as they handed me the bill before I even received my drinks.

The walls are decorated with local art, giving it a personal touch. There’s a pleasant aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods that fills the air. The staff is friendly and attentive, and they offer a wide variety of drinks, from rich espressos to creamy lattes, along with homemade pastries and light snacks. It's the perfect place to relax, catch up with friends, or enjoy some quiet time with a book.

Very nice cafe in central Trieste. Interior decor is very old but well looked after. Huge menu to choose from and all available food and drink comes in a number of languages to choose from. Coffee was excellent and would highly recommend. Will definitely be returning to Caffè San Marco when we come back to Trieste. Whilst no-body was unfriendly, an extra star would’ve been given if some staff were slightly more friendly. However, with English being a second language, it’s fair to assume it may be harder to have that type of conversation.
