The Church of Santa Maria e San Donato is a religious edifice located in Murano, northern Italy. It is known for its twelfth century Byzantine mosaic pavement and is said to contain the relics of Saint Donatus of Euroea as well as large bones behind the altar said to be the bones of a dragon slain by the saint. One of the most impressive features of San Donato is the lavish, multicolored mosaic floor, made in the opus sectile and the opus tessellatum techniques. The central figural panel depicts a set of four great interlacing circles—well-known symbols of eternity and hence figures of the everlasting God who is beyond time and space. At the center of it, set like a jewel, a fifth circle bears a Latin inscription that reads: “In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the year of our Lord 1141, the month of September, Indiction V.” The inscription demonstrates that San Donato’s tile floor was laid at the same time as that in the basilica di San Marco. The mosaic floor measures over 500 square meters and is made of porphyry, serpentine, and other precious Mediterranean stones mixed with glass paste.

Beautiful basilica, full of history and free. I found the floor particularly interesting thanks to the colourful stone mosaics. There is an interesting one with two cocks and a fox, and look for a chess “board”. The place for baptism with all the different colours is really nice! Behind the altar there are four huge bones, they look more than 1 metre long. According to legend, these are bones of the dragon slain by St. Donatus in Greece.

Amazing church, one of the oldest in the Venetian lagoon. It was originally built in the 7th century. The church and its bell tower are built of dark red-brown brick, without plastering. The colourful stone mosaic floor of the church dates from around 1140. It measures over 500 square metres and is made of porphyry, serpentine, and other precious stones. The monument is really unique and definitely worth visiting the island for.

The treasures do not end in Venice. I took a boat trip from San Marco square to Murano where those famous Venezian glass were made. And I went in one of the oldest churches in the region of Veneto - Santa Maria e San Donato, built in the 7th century. The floor is covered by a beautiful Byzantine mosaic and on the central apse is depicted St. Mary's in gold. Please don't miss out!

Called the Duomo of Murano, it is a church founded perhaps in the mid-tenth century (999 is a promise of the priest to the bishop of Torcello), the church was initially dedicated to Santa Maria. In 1125, it was associated with St. Donato the martyr, when the body of the saint was transported from Kefalonia. This is a must if you visit Murano.
