Incredible shop. The ukiyo-e selection was BY FAR the best of the 6 shops we visited in Kyoto. The owner is super helpful and informative and helped us to understand the historic art form.
You can flip through prints like browsing an old comic shop and most of what we saw dated back to the 1800s. The selection included some of the biggest names in Ukiyo-e for those with larger budgets but also some stunning vintage prints that were super affordable. We ended up stopping by 3 times during our 5 day Kyoto visit, buying a new piece each time. (We even considered a fourth visit).

Read moreNot the most helpful shop sadly. We went to find some wood block prints that complemented our existing one bought and were willing to pay. The owners said they only had original wood block prints (which were fine for us) but couldn’t help us find a complimentary print. And they mentioned “they cost a lot”. I appreciate there might be a language barrier but it seemed pretty clear they didn’t want our custom. I didn’t bother explaining to them that affordability wouldn’t be a barrier to the right piece, I had lost faith they would be a place I want to spend time and money in. However, there is an outstanding selection of beautiful and affordable pieces in brilliant condition, largely drawing on material from folktales and drama.
