Walking along the well-known Philosophers' Path, towards the end you find the signs for Honen-in, you get there by climbing a short climb to find yourself at the main gate of this small, little-known Buddhist monastery, simple but full of ancient charm. I was there in February, just before closing time. The thing that distinguishes it most from the other gates of Buddhist monasteries in Kyoto is certainly the gate with the thatched roof, very simple, rustic and full of charm. As soon as you enter you are flanked by two small rectangular mounds of sand (byakusadan) that with their abstract shape invite contemplation. The temple is in a quiet location and surrounded by greenery. The paths, stream and plants are all masterfully designed. I spoke to a very friendly older couple (the husband's English was excellent) who were pulling weeds and they gave me tips for further excursions. The entire temple is decorated with wonderful details, such as a small flower by the water for the hands. Due to the elevated location of the temple, you can see the city from there, framed by trees.
