An Arashiyama experience I'd highly recommend. Because it's on the opposite side of the river from Arashiyama's main attractions, this temple, pagoda, and fantastic lookout are easily missed. But don't go in through the main gate or you'll miss the best part. After crossing the Togetsu Bridge, go straight ahead. Where the road takes a left turn, there is a set of stone stairs between two hotels. This is the back entrance, taking you through ancient graveyards and lush moss gardens. It's truly beautiful and so peaceful and cool. Follow the path to Horin-ji, the 8th century Buddhist temple, the Horinji Tahoto Pagoda and around to your right, a lookout with the best view of Arashiyama.
