光明山摂取院常林寺と号する浄土宗の寺院です。天正元年(1573)、念仏専修僧、魯道(ろどう)によって開創され、当初は、寺町荒神口(上京区)に建てられていました。創建時より、知恩院とゆかりが深く、本末制度が確立したときには、総本山知恩院の役番としての地位を占めていました。しかし、寛文11年(1671)には、寺町の大火により類焼し、堂宇を悉く焼失しました。その後、現在の地に移転し、元禄11年(1698)、英誉(えいよ)によって本堂が再建されました。また、幕末の頃当寺は、勝海舟が宿坊として利用していたといわれています。 本堂には、本尊の阿弥陀三尊像が安置され、地蔵堂には、古くから若狭街道を往来する人々の信仰を集めたといわれる世継子育(よつぎこそだて)地蔵尊が祀られています。 また、当寺は、通称、「萩(はぎ)の寺」の名で人々に親しまれており、初秋には、紅白の萩の花が、境内一面に咲き乱れる。 なお、毎年9月の敬老の日には、「萩供養(はぎくよう)」が催されます。 2021年3月15日 モクレンが満開ですよ。 It is a temple of the Jodo sect called Jorinji Temple.
