Ninna-ji Nio-mon (仁和寺二王門) is the grand entrance gate of Ninna-ji Temple, a historic Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. This imposing structure is an important example of Japanese temple gate architecture and serves as a guardian entrance, protecting the temple grounds from evil spirits. The gate is named after the Nio guardians, two fierce-looking deity statues housed within, which symbolize strength and protection in Buddhist tradition.
Built in the 17th century during the Edo period, the Nio-mon stands tall with a multi-tiered roof, intricate wooden carvings, and bold architectural details characteristic of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The gate’s symmetrical design, large wooden pillars, and curved eaves reflect the influence of Chinese Buddhist architecture, which was adapted into Japanese temple construction.
The Nio statues, standing on either side of the entrance, represent Agyō (open-mouthed, symbolizing birth and power) and Ungyō (closed-mouthed, symbolizing death and strength)—a common feature in temple gates across Japan. These statues are meticulously carved and exude an aura of power and protection.
As part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, Ninna-ji Nio-mon remains an iconic landmark, attracting visitors who admire its historical significance, artistic details, and...

You can visit the special garden for 800Y. We skiped the special garden, since the park arround the whole site seemed big enough. The entrance worker was really nice to us and gave us the map in english.
