One of the best experiences I’ve had in Kyoto—truly unforgettable! I was lucky enough to visit right after opening, after spotting a poster at L’Escamoteur (which I also highly recommend) 🙏 From the moment you step inside, you’re immersed in a world where every detail is meticulously crafted: the music, the lighting, the costumes, the set design. It’s mysterious, elegant, and full of surprises — I won’t spoil too much, because discovering it yourself is part of the magic ✨ Cocktails are served throughout the evening and they were excellent. There’s also a brief introduction by Svengali that explains the concept and sets the tone with theatrical flair. Then the performances begin, and the night elevates to another level. The artists rotate, so it won’t be the same show every evening. The venue has two floors; we sat on the balcony, and at times the performers were right beside us—an intimate touch I loved! I never expected to find a place like this in Kyoto. If you enjoy live shows, immersive themed spaces, and great cocktails, put this at the top of your list. I can’t recommend it enough🙏

Blown away by the whole experience - from the second you step in, you're immersed in a new world. Very impressed with the production quality and attention to detail!! All other circus shows should take notes! I saw it twice during my visit to Kyoto. The Gold ticket is totally worth it - you're so close you're basically part of the show. On my second visit, I opted for the balcony to watch from a different angle and there's a whole new set of performances every night. Svengali was the highlight of my Japan trip, I can't recommend it enough. Pro tip: You can grab a drink at their sister bar L'Escamoteur (7 min walk away) for more magic-themed cocktails and hang out with the performers after the show!

Unique experience - from the first floor you are already jumping into another world - a staff in costume is welcoming you with a special outfit (you cannot miss it:) check your reservation, and call the elevator for you… you are then in a dark space where you don’t know what to do… until a little trap opens and a maiko activates an antique cash register …. To give you your magic ticket! Performances are amazing, the sound is sublime … and drinks are top notch as it’s the same owner as L’escamoteur bar (also to check;) strongly recommended - nothing else like it in Kyoto!!!

Svengali - House of Curiosities is Kyoto’s Newest Must-See!

Kyoto is a city steeped in tradition, but it's also embracing a thrilling new wave of immersive experiences, and leading the charge is Svengali - House of Curiosities. Having recently stumbled upon a poster for this enigmatic venue at Christophe’s already phenomenal L’Escamoteur (seriously, if you haven’t been, go), I was fortunate enough to go. And let me tell you, “fortunate” doesn't even begin to cover it.

From the moment you approach the unassuming building, a sense of mystery descends. The experience isn’t just about seeing a show; it’s about being drawn into another world. An escape! The pre-show ritual itself is brilliantly orchestrated, from the costumed greeter and the unique “key” to entry, to the antique cash register that delivers your ticket, every detail feels meticulously crafted. It's an experience before the experience even begins! And speaking of details…the introductory video? Forget a simple explanation of the concept; it’s a miniature masterpiece, a world-class short film with stunning animation and graphics that clearly demonstrates the immense time and passion poured into building this fantastical realm.

Inside, Svengali is an atmosphere unlike anything I've encountered in Japan, or frankly, anywhere else. The venue itself is breathtakingly designed, bathed in evocative lighting and filled with a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. You’re provided with unique masks and robes, instantly shedding your everyday self and embracing the spirit of anonymity and playful intrigue. It’s liberating!

The performances are truly jaw-dropping. Artists rotate, ensuring each night offers a fresh experience, and the intimate space, I highly recommend the Gold Square ticket [means you're practically with the performers] if you can snag it! The energy is electric, the artistry is world-class, and the show unfolds with a perfect blend of mystery, elegance, and surprise. I saw things I genuinely never thought I would see in my life. And yes, the cocktails are exceptional - expertly crafted under the direction of Christophe himself, building on the legacy of L’Escamoteur's renowned mixology.

Svengali is still young, but it already radiates a potential that is simply immense. It’s more than just entertainment; it’s an invitation to escape reality and connect with something truly special.

My wife and I had the pleasure of speaking with Christophe at the end of the evening, and what struck me most was his genuine desire to sprinkle joy into people's lives. He’s a meticulous visionary, and it’s clear that his team shares his passion... they are all-in, creating an experience where every member contributes to the magic. We saw how his supporting team and cast has bought in from L’Escamoteur to Svengali. You sense his positive vibrational energy and kindness in this world. You're truly grateful that they are supporting artists from all backgrounds, building a space for creativity and connection.

Christophe isn't running a business; he's building a community and giving back to this world. He even took the time to introduce us to another lovely couple attending that night who were our same ethnicity (but who lived in Irvine, CA), fostering a sense of shared wonder. He’s the glue holding this incredible world together, a true magician, and someone we are incredibly lucky to have enriching our lives with his artistry.

Svengali - House of Curiosities is not just a show; it's an experience you won't soon forget. Book your reservation now... you absolutely will not regret it. And while you’re at it, pop over to L’Escamoteur for a pre-show (or post-show!) drink. You can thank me later! Thanks again for making it an amazing night at both L’Escamoteur and Svengali.

My girlfriend and I were at L’Escamoteur (Svengali’s sister bar) a few blocks away in Kyoto one night and found out about Svengali through its enthusiastic bartenders and staff there. We were promised that Svengali would be an evening unlike any other, and we promptly made reservations for the following night to check it out.

The whole experience is shrouded in mystery from the moment you check in with Santiago, a friendly mustached gentleman standing in front of an indiscrete elevator which leads up to the two-story theater on the upper floors. Without giving much away, I’ll just say that once the elevator doors open, you are transported to a whole new world of magic and mystique. The drinks were great and the performances were outstanding, and we had a chance to mingle with the performers, staff, and our gracious host, Christophe, following the show.

I’m not going to post any photos (though I know others have already, in their reviews), as I think that spoils the mystique a bit. I’ll leave it at that and just say you need to check it out for yourself when in Kyoto. You won’t be...
