Este monumento fue construido para conmemorar el primer contacto entre Japón y USA a mediados del siglo XIX y que lideró el almirante Perry. Se ubica en un parque muy bonito que vale la pena recorrer. Además ofrece bonita vista de Shimoda.

歴史的に重要で下田のシンボリックな場所であると思われるが紫陽花の開花の時期以外は特に見どころがない場所。 綺麗に手入れすれば見晴らしも良くいい場所になると思うが残念。素朴な感じという言い方もあるが下田の街全体が城下町の名残りやなまこ壁など魅力的であるのに非常に勿体ない。伊豆半島最南端に近いので都心からアクセスは良くないが積極的にデザイナーを入れてプロモーションすれば川越に負けない観光地となる気がする。それが良いことかは別として良い所なのでただただ勿体ないと感じてしまう。

Interesting historic point. There's a discrepancy between the Japanese and English translation on the accompanying sign; in English the line is missing that the Japanese were forced to open up for trade...
