Edit after I've visited a couple of times over multiple years: 2024 September The cooks/owners kid used the tables right next to us as a playground for throwing plastic bottles. That loud bashing went on uninterrupted for over 20 minutes while we were eating. Extremely annoying and disruptive and the owner couldn't have cared less. Service honestly overall deteriorated. It was a half empty day with 5 staff present, yet we didn't get once asked whether we wanted drinks/a refill when they wordlessly took away glasses, no entrance greeting just stares, and one female staff started to take pictures of guests without asking. Around 8:30pm the music was strainingly loud, so we left for a different more comfortable place.
2022 May Please fix the door to the only toilet! The lock doesn't align with the hole, so it's impossible to lock the door! This was incredibly inconvenient and I don't feel like sitting down in your restaurant when there's no acceptable toilet anywhere in the vicinity.
Great things in this place: Amazing pulled pork: super tender, juicy, and packed with flavour! The pulled pork "sandwich" has a tasty fresh burger bun, and a very generous amount of meat. And the loaded barbecue fries are giant sized, much bigger and better than expected! The fresh fries also taste a lot better than the usual frozen ones :)
Neutral - not for us The chicken sandwich/burger was a tad too spicy for us Service is usually friendly & fully available in English, but varies with the Japanese staff On some days the music is too loud to talk The fish from the fish and chips soaked up too much oil and the fish chunks were too small.
We didn't like at all: The sides we tried so far were all poor. What I recall: Broccoli with bacon was cold and obviously prepared too far in advance. Together with the sauce it felt like very low effort for a high price. The KFC style broccoli was even worse: cold, soggy, and fried likely hours before. The sauce was simply spicy without much else to it - very disappointing and again...

We came for a second visit on a Thursday night, but wish we hadn't. The bartender made this experience truly awful and you could tell their heart is simply not in the job. No welcome, no thank you, blunt responses, and stood constantly on her phone behind the bar. Despite causing excessive wastage down the drain whilst pouring, she somehow then only poured a clearly unacceptable 4/5th of an already expensive "large" size stout and when I asked for it to be topped-up she told me "that's how it comes because the head went down". Surely this is not Kaigan Brewery's policy? I worked in cocktail/craft beer bars for over 10 years and have been to dozens of craft beer bars all over Japan and never felt the standards of service was this low before. Serious staff training is needed here.
So our visit was already regrettable when our burgers arrived, which were actually very good and super tasty. HOWEVER, as we are eating, a cockroach crawled up the wall next to our table by the sofas. It's really hard to enjoy any bar when customer service is very poor and the hygiene standards are questionable.
We won't be returning here and I might go as far as to avoid Kaigan's beers from now on in other places. A real shame as I enjoyed their recent article in the Japan Beer Times which is what reminded me to visit...
Read moreThis was my third and LAST time at Coasters. Unfortunately, I can only go during the weekend and it’s always packed with extremely loud foreigners. I, as a foreigner, can’t believe how they act. They treat this place like a club, screaming at each other and the staff does nothing. It’s definitely not a place to go and enjoy a craft beer. There are MANY other significantly quieter and better places to enjoy a craft beer in Tokyo.
The beers every visit were nearly all low range beers. Check their menu on Untapped, you’ll be lucky to find a beer with a rating over 3.5. On top of that, they’re charging 1500-1600¥/pint for these poor quality beers.
Finally, the food. Come on. How do you mess up Fish and Chips? I thought the time I got deep fried salmon in Tokyo was the worst fish and chips, nope. Coasters served me round balls of flavorless MUSH. As a chef, I know exactly what their “chef” did wrong. The oil wasn’t hot enough and he dropped too much frozen fish into the pan or deep fryer causing the oil temp to drop drastically, rookie mistake! The fish was soggy and mushy on the inside with absolutely no flavor. Worst fish and chips I’ve ever had.
I think the chef enjoyed sitting at a customers table and flirting with girls and drinking with them more than he enjoyed...
