Enjoyed this Tokyo Night and Light Show with Kie together, it is free and a pity if tourist miss it! it is recorded as the world's largest permanent display by Guinness World Record!
To be exact, the show earned the Guinness title for the largest architectural projection-mapped display (permanent)
The light show takes place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government No. 1 Building in Shinjuku every night, the high quality changing high resolution color lights projected onto the building is marvelous, the area being projected on measuring around 110 m by 126 m.
how does it work? i did a little research and here is my over simplified summary:
40 projectors are used to project images on the wall of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Main Building The very high-resolution image (changing color and form of the light up images) is projected across most of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building (as a movie screen) by a projector with the world's highest brightness. The music or song accompaning the show is broadcast by an high-end audio system which produces life-like three-dimensional sound. If you like to see the phenomenal “Godzilla: Attack on Tokyo!' Show, please note that it only runs on weekends and public holidays. Check government building website to confirm the show time and date. This year is the 70th anniversary of the birth of Godzilla . The special movie will be projected onto the east side wall surface of the central government office building.
For those who are a Godzilla fans and will visit Tokyo in August, then don’t miss the chance of seeing the show and getting a manhole card “shin Godzilla" in Shinjuku Tourist Information Center. A manhole lid with the design of Godzilla was installed near entrance of Shinjuku TOHO Building of Shinjuku, Kabuki-Cho. If you have time check it out.

Read moreThis is probably the coolest thing you can experience for free now in Tokyo while it is still running. The show repeats every half hour after dark until 9.30pm and it changes on weekends. Check their website for more details.
However, I learned that many locals are actually upset about this and consider it to be a waste of taxpayer money. It doesn't really attract that huge of a tourist crowd despite how cool it is. There's actually not a lot of publicity for this plus there's nothing else to do in the area at night. However, if you plan to go to the Tokyo Metropolitan Govt building for the free sky view, you should stick around till dark for this. Seems more people are aware of the free sky deck than the night lights.
Nearest station is Tochomae on the Oedo line which also takes you to the exact right spot to watch this which is the small plaza across the building. Google might suggest Nishi-Shinjuku on the Marunouchi line as an option. Don't take that one. It's a much longer walk than the 600m stated cos you will need to climb stairs to get up on an elevated road and than go back down into the plaza unless you want to watch while craning your neck....
