Ushijima Shrine is a gorgeous, peaceful spot tucked between Sensō-ji and the Skytree - an ancient site dating back to the 800s, yet hidden in plain sight. My friend and I happened to find it this past April when walking towards the Skytree. Dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the Shinto god of storms and brother of Amaterasu, it’s said to protect against illness and disasters. Its namesake “ushi” (ox) symbolizes strength and healing, and visitors can touch the large stone ox statue here to pray for good health. We got goshuin here (plus free bookmarks!), and while the woman at the reception handled the stamps, she took our books elsewhere for the handwritten calligraphy - traditionally only done by those with religious training (i.e. monks), since it’s considered a sacred offering. She seemed genuinely happy to help us, which made the moment feel even more special. The grounds, dotted with stone statues and almost completely free of tourists, give it a quietly ancient, underrated charm.
