We had a great day of fishing with Captain Miguel and mates Eduardo and Filipe aboard the Showtime on February 8, 2024. The weather was not great that day due to very high winds. In fact, I had a second day of fishing scheduled with Kianah’s Sport Fishing earlier in the week on the 6th which had to be cancelled due to high winds closing the port. Not long after we reached the fishing grounds offshore and set the lines out we hooked into a sailfish. Unfortunately, the fish got off soon after but not before entertaining us with a couple of magnificent leaps out of the water while it tried to shake the hook. Despite a few more hookups that also got off I asked the crew to take us in closer to shore after a few hours of fishing in the very high winds. I really wanted to catch a Sailfish, a bucket list fish for me, but I had already been sea sick early in the day due to the windy conditions and my wife and children were struggling to cope with nausea as well so I wanted to get us out of the punishing winds into more calm water where my family could enjoy the experience without the sea sickness.
Once we got back back closer to shore and out of the winds the crew quickly put us on hungry barracuda that kept us all busy for the remainder of the day. We landed 10 barracuda in total with my 7 year old son catching the largest one of the day at 55 inches after a long battle on a spinning rod we brought from home! This was by far the largest fish of his life and he could not contain his excitement. The action was chaotic and we got to enjoy watching these magnificent fish swim up to the surface and attack the baits over and over. Sight fishing at its most exciting. To top it all off, the crew made time at the end of the day to let my wife and daughter snorkel over a nearby reef before we headed back to port.
I will definitely return to fish with Kianah’s Sport Fishing charters when we visit Cancun again. The captain and crew were professional and courteous. They worked hard all day keeping the boat and gear in order and lines in the water to ensure we had the best chance possible to catch fish. They also graciously accommodated us when we could no longer tolerate the rough water and found us other fish to catch to make our day an exciting and memorable experience for our entire family. Thanks again to Captain Miguel, Eduardo and Filipe for making the day a special one for me and my family despite very tough weather conditions and a rough start. We hope to fish with you again soon. Mil gracias from the...
Read moreMy wife and I recently started traveling abroad and our first trip landed us in Cancun. Immediately loved the region and being a “ midwestern american “ fisherman I decided for on a short charter with another company. Fishing was fun landing a large black grouper, black tip shark and several small vibrant fish. Several charters later I stumbled across Kianah Sportfishing and after speaking with their lead man Alex I was convinced these guys would be the team for me! I had called Alex several times in the months leading to the trip and he ALWAYS answered and had an answer for whatever question was on my mind. Had my charter scheduled on the Grand Slam on Feb 7th and 8th. The port authority had the gulf shut down for charter fishing every day I was there with the exception of the two day charters I had booked… LUCKY! On day 1 Captain Arturo and first mate Franklin took me to a spot where they had me on sail fish all day! The captain knew ALL the spots to go for the fish I was targeting, got me to those locations AND catching em’! Ranging in size from 82”-98” I hooked TEN and landed EIGHT Sailfish! I Have never had a better fishing experience in my entire life… until maybe the Second day of fishing where we were targeting large Shark. On day two we were quickly on shark and busted a couple of steel leaders straight away. The first mate Franklin had the presence of mind to double up the steel leader and before I knew it I was in an 1 1/2hr long battle over 6 miles with a 340lb Bull Shark. Franklins constant hard work throughout the day kept me with a rod in my hand or with a fish on or a fish on my lap! The Bull brought me to the brink of physical and mental exhaustion but finally had him landed! The Grand Slam crew worked seamlessly together, I can’t imagine a better team in the area. HIGHLY...
Read moreEdit: I’m still giving 5 stars for the charter fishing because it was amazing but if you plan to “mount” your fish, don’t fall for their pressure sales tactic. As I was reeling my fish in, I had a contract put in my face asking if I wanted to mount the fish because that would determine if they release the fish or not. I decided I would mount it so they kept the fish and I signed the contract. My fault for not reading the fine print until we got home from our trip but the contract says they don’t even use your real fish, it’s a replica mount. I have no problem with replicas, but with a replica there is no reason to be rushed in deciding, you could decide years later if you wanted to as long as you have the measurements. Take your time and find a reputable taxidermy company that you like. Don’t be forced into using the company these guys offer. I don’t understand why they pressure you into making a decision in the heat of the moment, most likely because they get a commission by getting you to sign the taxidermy contract. I was able to get my contract cancelled and found a company that ended up being $800 cheaper for the replica. So what actually happened to my sailfish and why did it need to be kept??
Original review: These guys are on the fish! What an incredible day! We boated 2 Sailfish, 35 barracuda, 1 red snapper, and 1 shark. It was non-stop action from the beginning and I’m so glad I took the time to find the best fishing charter instead of using the one our resort was offering. The crew is amazing! They were very knowledgeable and super friendly! 10/10...
