This was an incredible place to visit. It was recommended by a friend. I am a musician so it kind of makes sense that i'd visit a music museum BUT this is so much more than a music museum! There is a great section on the music of Africa in general to the rich variety of music from Morocco more specifically. It's very well done and as it was quiet I was allowed to try out some of the instruments for myself! It is a fantastic restoration of a medieval Riad, possibly one of the finest architectural things I've seen in the whole of Marrakech. It was also the birth place of famous Moroccan artist Mellakh, the first floor is dedicated to his life and work and there are some pieces on display. There is also the restoration of the typical reception rooms of a wealthy family's Riad several hundred years ago. The restoration is exquisite and very true to the original scheme of the house. I went onto the roof top terrace for the view and a Frenchman started taking to me. Turns out he was the owner of the museum and also the owner of the nearby Mansion de la Photographie. He was a friendly and fascinating character who had a real passion for preserving and promoting Moroccan heritage, it was an honour to meet him. Finally, the guy on the entrance who's name say escapes me, was very friendly too and as it was quiet gave me a guided tour of the ground floor.
I cannot recommend this museum enough. It definitely needs to be shouted about more and needs to be seen and enjoyed by more people - tell all of your friends!

Read moreWe just returned from the musical evening at this museum that is held 3 nights a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) and it was a very lovely way to spend an evening in Marrakech!
Before the performance you have a chance to tour the museum (included in the price of your ticket). The small but well curated showcase of African musical instruments and music is highly interesting and educational, and the building itself is magnificently restored. The 40-minute performance is held in a beautiful and intimate salon within the riad, a truly special venue to enjoy such special music (we were treated to Gnawa music on the evening we went mid-April 2024).
After the performance everyone is invited to the rooftop terrace for Moroccan tea and cookies - well organized and perfectly timed to enjoy a wonderful sunset view. There is also an option to add on a local dinner which I definitely recommend doing: dinner is likewise served on the rooftop terrace. It is a set menu (no choices but a vegetarian option is offered). The simple but tasty homecooked dinner was a very nice finishing touch. If you enjoy cultural music and are looking for a unique experience in Marrakech away from the touristy crowds, absolutely be sure to put this...
Read moreFANTASTIC! Don't be put off by the fact that getting to this museum requires walking down some winding and narrow alleys. There are helpful signs along the way, and OMG it is so worth it. At first it seems small, but it consists of a labyrinth of rooms on different floors, which you access through narrow, winding stairs. It's a surprise of discovery around every corner. If you don't like musical history but are into either archaeology, architecture, or sociology, you will be thrilled with a visit here. The exhibits, especially the ones above the initial rooms, are extremely informative, and the top floor (not counting the terrace) is a marvel of decor. The building itself is worth the visit. No crowds - I had the place to myself most of the time. The staff were also super friendly and enthusiastic. If you purchase a 60dh ticket, the same ticket provides entrance to the Photography...
