The Hague's Historic Museum — Attraction in The Hague

We visited Den Haag in the end of August and went to the museum because we really wanted to know more about the city's rich history.

Our visit started with a pretty rude woman at the reception, who didn't give us any information about the exposition and would have obviously prefered to be left alone reading. We made our way up to the temporary exposition (the main one was apparently closed) and entered a room with plenty of "old stuff". The idea of the collection was to showcase some artifacts close to the curators hearts and tell the story of the city that way. It might be a nice collection for people from Den Haag but it was absolutely unpractical for tourists who visited the museum to have some actual information. The pieces weren't shown in any chronological order or information about the time and place they were from. The little information available was in Dutch, the rest had to be researched by phone. The only informative part we saw was a room with some paintings of the magistrates and civic order that at least explained the earlier function of the building.

The museum is completely unuseful for tourists and a real disappointment. Might be nice for people who actually already know some of Den...

Een Loosduiner is sinds 1923 ook een Hagenaar. Daarom is het ook interessant om in deze expositie te zien hoe de gemeente Den Haag is omgegaan met haar verleden. Weet u nog hoe het centrum van Loosduinen er uit zag voor 5 januari 1970? In ieder geval begon toen de sloop van de oude Gemeente Secretarie op de hoek van de Willem III straat, de Emmastraat en del Wilhelminastraat. Wie heeft er een foto-reportage van gemaakt? Was er in Loosduinen ook een Frédéric Linck? In ieder geval heeft de laatstgenoemde laten zien en horen dat je niet alles had hoeven 'pikken'. Ga kijken naar deze foto-expositie en zie en besef hoe de Gemeente Den Haag in het verleden is omgegaan met haar geschiedenis en oorsprong. Weet u nog? Het oudste monument van Den Haag staat nogsteeds in Loosduinen. De Abdijkerk. De rest van de historie is verdwenen. Dankzij de slopers van het Spuiplein. De foto-expositie in het Atrium van het stadhuis is een zeer magere afspiegeling van wat Loosduinen is geweest. De grens liep tot aan de Beeklaan. Helaas 'stadje nooit genoeg' , maakte daar in 1923 een eind aan en heeft er nooit iets voor teruggeven. Behalve een carillon op het Loosduinse Hoofdplein. Wat heeft Loosduinen met een carillon te maken. Geen flauw idee. Op dat plein, dat overigens een zeer wanstaltige afspiegeling is van de oorspronkelijke situatie, had toch minstens iets moeten staan dat herinnerde aan de tuinbouwgeschiedenis van dit dorp. Omliggende gemeenten zoals Rijswijk, Voorburg, Voorschoten en Leidschendam hebben veel van hun verleden bewaard en het is leuk om daar rond te lopen. In Loosduinen is er niets meer dat nog uitnodigt om er naar toe te gaan, behalve een supermarkt. Hagenaars en oud-Loosduiners let op uw zaak! Voor je het weet is de verbouwing van Het Binnenhof een kopie van het centrum van Loosduinen en loop je daar rond op een plein met een waterorgel. Dat lijkt toch immers ook een beetje op de Hofvijver met z'n eiland waar geen ooievaar...

Very interesting, all about the Hague, with lots of interesting stories. If you go in the rooms in numerical order, it takes you through the history from past up until present. Lots of artwork, info on the Dutch family, dollhouses, and even some information regarding the Nazi occupation time period (with artifacts). Gift shop small but packed full of interesting books if you want to learn more about the Hague. If you have a bag, they will ask you to put it in a locker (free) downstairs before...
