Great for people who don’t really have the time to head to spas or onsens around, this is a great experience for a quick foot soak that’s completely free of charge. I came here to experience the foot baths with the kids. Enjoyed a quick walk around the park and found the foot bath. One was sheltered whilst another was in the open. The smell was bearable at the foot bath but if you do walk around the mud pools area, the smell of the sulphur could be quite overwhelming for someone not accustomed to the smell. You can soak for as long as you want in the foot bath, n enjoy yourself, but there will be people coming in here n there, so be prepared for some crowds. Do prepare some towels or wipes to wipe your foot dry if you are wearing covered shoes. There is no other water source to wash off your hands or feet post foot bath dip. It will be great if there is.. There are a lot of cautionary signs informing people not to go for a dip in the foot bath due to amoebic meningitis.

A recent addition, the free Kuirau Park footbaths are fed from nearby alkaline chloride springs. There are two baths, one outside and the other under cover. Keep in mind this is a footbath, so bathing is not advised and, as always with natural geothermal springs, don't let the water get anywhere near your mouth. If you can't afford the likes of the pools in Hells Gate or the high-end polynesian spa then this is a good option to experience a soak in the hot springs. Take a towel to sit on as the wooden seats do get wet. Other options for the budget traveller include Waitangi Soda Springs near lake Rotoma, Kerosene creek (be wary of car thieves) and Hot & Cold just down the road from Waiotapu.

We read online that that Kuirau Park had recently re-located the free foot bath to a new area within the park. Hence, we were looking around the park and actually stumbled upon the old food bath before eventually found the newly renovated free foot bath near to the playground. If you find yourselves walking towards hot spring pools like the photo shown above, you’re heading in the wrong direction – although it is quite cool to take a couple of photos if you really walked too far away like us 😂
