Ollantaytambo is a settlement with a long history located in the Sacred Valley of Peru. The area was settled by various Andean groups, including Hari, before Inca incorporation by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, who made Ollantaytambo into his royal estate. In 1536, Manco Inca Yupanqui led the Inca resistance against the Spanish, fortifying and establishing Ollantaytambo as a temporary neo-Inca capital. In the following year, he defeated the Spanish in the Battle of Ollantaytambo. Despite his victory, Spanish reinforcements to Cusco forced Manco Inca to withdraw the neo-Inca government to Vilcabamba.
