Taking a spade to Plac Szczepański was no easy task, and to no-one’s surprise numerous archaeological discoveries repeatedly delayed the work. Centuries before any pavement was ever laid down, this was the site of the Church of Saint Szczepan (hence the name) and an adjoining cemetery. When the order was disbanded in the early 19th century, the church was levelled and the inconveniently placed gravestones were likewise ripped out. The arrival of Napoleon’s army in the early 19th century breathed a brief flicker of life in Plac Szczepański when it became a parade ground. Plans for a monument glorifying the diminutive general’s achievements went out the window when the Frenchman’s campaign hit the skids on the plains of Russia and Plac Szczepański soon reverted to functioning as a vegetable market, before becoming a parking lot in the 1960s. Today the square is used for public art, concerts, festivals and other events, while the buildings around it showcase some of the city’s finest Art Nouveau architecture. Don’t miss the reliefs on the façades of the historic 1843 Teatr Stary at number 1, the 1909 Secession building of the Agricultural Society at number 8 or the 1901 Palace of the Arts at number 4. Draped in art not only on the exterior, the Szołayski House at number 11 houses a branch of the Kraków...

This bustling square, which is to the west of Main Market Square, is smaller, yet quieter and less crowded. The square is lined on all sides with stunning architecture, restaurants, lively cafes, and interesting shops. We found this along with another square to the east, the perfect spot to relax and take in the charm of the city. In front of the Art Place on the west side of the square, there is a small pond with fountain spouts and a ground-level fountain with pop-up jets that shoot up from the ground at varying intervals and heights. This makes it a favorite place to visit in the summer for families with children. The square does have quite a few park benches, manicured ground cover, but very few shade trees. The square is accessible 24/7 and is...

The place we know as Szczepański Square only at the beginning of the 19th century became the spacious square we know it today. Previously, there were wooden and brick buildings here, including the parish church of St. Stephen surrounded by a cemetery from about 1300. It was also one of the largest markets in Krakow, and a parking for cars. The square is surrounded by a number of buildings: -nineteenth-century Art Nouveau building of the Stary Theatre, - Art Nouveau tenement house of Wolny erected in the years 1908-1909 - Art Nouveau building of the Society of Friends of Fine Arts, called the Palace of Arts, built in 1901 - Szołayski tenement house - Art Nouveau building of the Society of Friends of Fine Arts, called the Palace of Arts, built in 1901.
