Well worth a visit to see the museum with its religious artifacts and Jesuit (Society of Jesus) connection. Then to see the oppulent São Roque church with its stunning sacristy recalling the life of the Navarrese missionary San Francisco Javier, co-founder of the Jesuits along with Ignatius of Loyola. San Francisco died in China in 1552 and is buried in Goa the former Portuguese Colony in India. Beyond there was an exhibition about the Portuguese in China. Very interesting place to visit for an understanding of Portuguese history. The museum includes a small restaurant with a lovely courtyard attached that has bamboo growing to remind us of the Sino- Portuguese connection. Next door is the Santa Casa de la Misericordia de Lisboa founded by Queen Leonor of Portugal in 1498. It is a Catholic lay brotherhood that is connected to the church. It is an international...
Read moreThe Museum of Sao Roque is attached to the historic Church of Sao Roque at Largo Trindade Coelho. Entry is (€2.50 per adult). You can also see the church (free entry) as part of your visit.
The Museum includes two floors and probably 9-10 gallery rooms filled with church artefacts, artworks and other historic religious items. Highlight of the museum are the treasures from the Chapel of St. John the Baptist which is located in the Church near the high altar.
There is also a cafe with inner courtyard seating and access if you fancy a drink or bite to eat before or after your visit to the museum.
In the end, the collection at the Museum of Sao Roque is really good, a fitting complement to seeing the church and overall very good combined experience. Recommend allowing around 20+ minutes to browse the full...
Read moreIn Sao Roque museu, I had the unpleasant experience of being pressured by staff in blue uniforms.
Around 6:20 in the evening, I passed by the museum ticket booth and was curious about the museum, so I wanted to look around it. But remnant time seemed short, so I decided to visit again the next day to see the museum. At that time, the ticket office staff kindly recommended that there was still 40 minutes of viewing time left, which means that I had enough time. Her recommendation made me to buy the ticket.
Later, at 6:40, an employee in blue uniform came and forced me to leave in 10 minutes with a rude and unfriendly tone! Although I explained what I was told by the ticket office lady, the blue shirt staff still pressured me to leave before 6:50. I felt very bad about being interrupted and forced while I was concentrating on watching, and the situation is very unreasonable.
At 6:50, the entire floor was turned off which makes the spectators unable to look around.
If the lights should be turned off at 6:50 and all visitors have to leave, it is necessary to inform the same thing at the ticket office. If the operating hours are REALLY until 7 o'clock, the rights of the person who bought the ticket must be sufficiently guaranteed until 7 o'clock. I want all staff of the museum should have a unified opinion about the operating hours and accurately guide visitors.
