This is a stone pillar that historically symbolized municipal autonomy and judicial authority in medieval Portugal. Originally erected between the 12th and 14th centuries, it was used for public punishments and served as a physical emblem of local power. The original structure was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. A new column was designed in the late 18th century by Eugénio dos Santos and Carvalho as part of the city's reconstruction. In 1886, during urban modernization, it was relocated to its current position in front of Lisbon City Hall.

This is a pillar in the middle of a square. It is made of iron, stonework and marble. What makes it outstanding from an architectural point of view is that it is carved from a single piece of stone apparently. The area was devastated by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. It's nice to grab a coffee around here. Follow here and on IG for more travel and food and drink tips, ideas and reviews @one.more.step.along.the.world

The Pillory of Lisbon is a declared National Monument in the centre of Municipal Square. Historically this has been a pillar where criminals would have been chained for public shaming. What you will is a twisted pillar of Manueline architectural style and topped by a spiralling armillary ball. Today, it is simply a decorative feature and link to local history.

Beautiful place, but be careful about aggressive saxophone player. He will verbally attack you and might even try to charge at you if sees you are making videos of that beautiful square and buildings around while alone on the square.

He was schooled by police, so he stays calm when there enough people on the square. But he starts to pick a verbal fight with people making their videos, like he owns the square later at night. Look for short, bold guy.

Square is marvelous, even more so on Christmas. But you should come here even after Christmas- it still has lights on the buildings around it.(just be careful if you are recording them alone., because bold loser will try to attack your...
