Standing on the Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) you cannot overlook the Arca da Rua Augusta, superficially looking like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but not standing alone and integrated here in the adjacent buildings. It marks the end of the Rue da Augusta, a major shopping street, hence the name. It is a perfect getaway from the crowds on street level. Free access with the Lisbon card.
A modern elevator brings you to the 2nd floor. Continue from there via winding stairs to the top, and enjoy the view over the city from 30 meters (100 feet) high. The narrow stairs are one-way only, allowing traffic either up or down. There is a button with a red/green light to signal free passage. Alas, there is no instruction next to the button, so one has to learn the hard way what the purpose is of the button and the red/green light. The protocol is simple: push the button, and wait for the light to become green. If you ignore it, there is a chance that you meet other visitors going in the opposite direction, forcing a decision who is to turn around.
Standing next to the oversized statue on top, you can enjoy an excellent view over the square and the Tagus river on one hand and the many landmarks in the city on the other hand. A perfect alternative to the Santa-Justa lift with its long lines of waiting tourists. A mystery to me why this arch is less busy with visitors, as the views are comparable and just as...

This monument was built to commemorate the city's recovery from the 1755 earthquake that devastated Lisbon. The arch was completed in 1875. From Rua Augusta, you see the backside of the arch which has a clock face surrounded by decorative relief. It is not as attractive from this location however, fromhere but you see the statue of King Jose I through the arch gap. This is nice for photographs.
From the square you see the full spectrum of design that went into the arch's construction. Here you see six columns holding up the 30 metre tall structure, a relief of Portugal's Coat of Arms midway up the centre arch, as well as an allegorical arrangement of figures, three atop the centre arch which opens to Rua Augusta and one each upon the two side arches which form part of the walkway around the plaza at the north end. It is a nice overall composition worth a few clicks of...
