Archaeological remains were discovered here during the renovation of the buildings of the Millennium BCP bank in the early nineties. The responsible attitude of the bank enabled the expansion of excavations and the emergence of this wonderful archaeological center dating back 2500 years of Lisbon's history.
Núcleo Arqueológico da Rua dos Correeiros, which was recognized as a National Monument in Lisbon in 2015, contains finds from the Iron Age to the rebuilding period after the Great Lisbon earthquake in 1755.
The museum can only be visited by appointment. At your appointment time, the museum's tour guide will greet you and show you around. When we visited, there was no one there other than my wife and me. Our guide was very polite and professional. It was one of the best museums I have ever visited with its research, preservation and most importantly exhibition method. I think they are a very good positive example for modern museology, especially with their exhibition methods. If you are interested in Lisbon history or quality museums, I definitely...
Read moreOne of the best highlights of our trip to Portugal was this free archeological site. The 50 minute guided tour in English was hosted by a passionate and knowledgeable archaeologist. The site was discovered when the property owner, Millennium bcp bank, wanted to build a parking garage. The bank created a Foundation to support the site and fund these excellent tours to see the Roman ruins and other layers. Logistics: Must make advanced reservation via the website. Submit the form indicating your day preference and they will email back with day/time confirmation. Don't be late as tours begin on time. Enter at address provided (#9) and wait in lobby area near glass flooring. The tour exits from address #21, a few doors down. There are many, many people turned away daily for not having a reservation as it's limited capacity. Of note for tall folks, the ceiling height is low in a few areas of the excavation site as I'm only 5' 1" ft tall and I had to be careful not to...
Read moreI had a wonderful educational experience being led by Gita through the basement of the bank. This is not just about the Roman ruins (an old fish factory and the ancient road it is located next to), but it tells you much about our built environment and about the job of being an archaeologist. and the responsibility that comes with that. It's not just Roman down here, there are multiple layers upon layers of history that you can clearly see yourself. Someonw has to decide what to preserve and show and what to lose. And the fact that all this may exist under every building of this "old city" of Lisbon makes this a really wonderful experience to explain the city. And the fact that I was the only one there and basically got a 1 hour tour with a practitioner was one of the highlights of my entire Portugal trip. And the whole thing is wonderfully set up...
