BEWARE!! ALERT!! The food is okay BUT watch out! DISCRIMINATION! Wait staff tries to charge more than listed price on menu. Unless you are a local or frequent customer, you can be mistreated, overcharged or treated with disrespect. We arrived early (well before the restaurant was busy or crowded -only 3 other couples seated). We ordered without delay & chose the more expensive grilled fish available that day. About 20 minutes after making our selection, we noticed that a party of five people wandered in off the street & found themselves a table, and then 4 more couples entered around 15 minutes afterwards...all of which received their food & were eating before us. Grilled fish (our order) cooks quickly & is easy enough to prepare. We asked the waitress about the delay & she reacted with irritation -but no explanation or reason why. Finally she brought my wife & me our meals (nearly an hour after we had ordered it). We are experienced travelers (five continents) of modest means but we recognize clear-cut discrimination. The bill came with prices that didn't match the menu (2 euros more than dish listed). Again, no explanation, no rationale -only frowns because we caught them overcharging. STAY AWAY !! Plenty of other good restaurants in the area who don't...
Read moreIt is with big sadness that i write this review, after being a regular client for the last 10 years it is my way of saying goodbye to one of the last real Portuguese restaurants in my neighborhood, I'm Portuguese but i will write it in English because tourists will be from now on the core clients so it is important for them to know that there was a glorious food past to the place. The original restaurant owner, Sr. Antonio just sold the place to a new owner that is maintaining the same name but the changes are already happening, you see, investment capital doesn't have time or patience to do things the old way, the proper way. For now the food continues to be great( the old chef is staying for a few more months) but the prices are already way up and classics like Nacos were suggested with a inferior meat than Maronesa and without grelos. Another classic Jaquinzinhos is now a Petisco and it brings with it the idea that the Tapas phase will eventually come like all the surrounding tourist traps. Thanks for all the memories, crazy nights, beautiful simple meals and fantastic value for money, the king is dead, long...
Read moreUnassuming corner restaurant on a hilly section of Lisbon. We almost passed it by, despite looking for it because there isn't much signage visible. But my goodness, what a great experience it was! The hostess was super friendly and helpful, answering our many questions about the wines and food. We started out with a bread and olive board, which included butter and olive oil. There were toasted and non-toasted slices of very nice baguette, and the olives, while not large, were very tasty, as was the peppery olive oil. The cheese was fairly soft and mild and went so well with the bread and olives. I had the pork for the main, which was a very generous helping of tender pan-grilled pork, French fries and small green salad. I wasn't able to finish all of this, but partly because I wanted to try one of the desserts, which was a biscuit cake, drizzled with dark chocolate syrup. This was a nice way to finish the meal as it wasn't terribly sweet or heavy. We came away really enjoying the whole experience, and felt that we had a taste of honest, non-touristy food - just what we were looking for....
