The Old English Yard. This building was constructed in XV century and belonged to Ivan Bobrischev the Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Grand Duke Ivan III of Moscow (1440-1505). Bobrischev had no heirs and this house become government property in XVI century. Sir Richard Chancellor (1521-1556) found Northern Sea Way to Russia and Moscovy Company was founded in London in 1555. Tsar Ivan IV of Russia (1530-1584) granted English merchants this building together with trading rights and customs privileges. Step by step this building became the center of English diplomacy and trade in Russia. English merchants bought new building in 1636 and ever since that date present build got the name of Old English Yard. All trade between Russia and England were stopped in 1649 when radical religious sectarians beheaded King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland (1600-1649).
