Društvo Sv. Save je osnovano 1886.god, 8 godina nakon što je Srbija međunarodno priznata. Cilj društva je bio da širi prosvetu i neguje nacionalna osećanja u srpskom narodu. Društvo je 1890.god podiglo zgradu "Dom Sv. Save" kao dom za smeštaj srpskih dečaka van Srbije. Izradu projekta je radio arhitekta Jovan Ilkić. Finansijska sredstva za izradu doma su obezbeđena dobrovoljnim prilozima. U lunetima, iznad prozora prvog sprata nalaze se grbovi srpskih zemalja, koje je izradio likorezac Jovan Hajnrih Noken prema crtežima slikara Đoke Jovanovića. Pre izgradnje "Doma Sv. Save" na ovom placu se (po zapisima putopisaca) krajem XVI veka nalazio karavansaraj Mehmed-paše Sokolovića, a 1717.god je rekonstruisan (od strane Austrijanaca) u baroknu palatu za princa Eugena Savojskog, koja je...

Zgrada Društva Svetog Save sagrađena je 1924. godine, prema projektu iz 1914. godine. Autor projekta bio je poznati srpski i beogradski arhitekta Petar Bajalović, dugogodišnji profesor na Arhitektonskom odseku Tehničkog fakulteta u Beogradu.
