The Belgrade Fortress is an absolute gem nestled in the heart of Serbia's capital city. Steeped in history and surrounded by lush greenery, this fortress is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Belgrade. As a history enthusiast, I was in awe of the rich cultural heritage and stunning architecture that the fortress offers. Upon entering the fortress, you'll be transported back in time. The ancient walls, towers, and gates stand as a testament to the city's resilience throughout the centuries. The blend of various architectural styles, from Byzantine to Ottoman, creates a unique and captivating atmosphere. It's fascinating to wander through the fortress, exploring its nooks and crannies, and imagining the stories that unfolded within these walls. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the panoramic views from the fortress. Perched high on a hill, overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, the vistas are simply breathtaking. Whether you visit during the day or at dusk, the sight of Belgrade's cityscape stretching out before you is mesmerizing. Don't forget your camera, as this is a picture-perfect spot! The fortress also houses several museums and exhibits that delve deeper into Belgrade's history. From the Military Museum to the Museum of the City of Belgrade, there is something to satisfy every curiosity. These well-curated exhibitions offer a glimpse into the city's past, from its medieval origins to the turbulent times of World War II. Furthermore, the grounds surrounding the fortress are a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Walking along the ramparts and enjoying the well-maintained gardens is a delightful experience. There are also plenty of benches and picnic spots where you can relax and soak in the peaceful ambiance. It's a great place to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking an awe-inspiring view, the Belgrade Fortress won't disappoint. The combination of its historical significance, architectural beauty, and panoramic vistas make it an unmissable attraction. I highly recommend allocating ample time to explore and truly appreciate this cultural gem.

Belgrade Fortress is one of the most iconic landmarks in Serbia, offering visitors a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, the fortress holds immense historical significance, as it has been a strategic stronghold for centuries. Walking through its ancient gates and along its stone walls, you can feel the echoes of past civilizations that shaped the region. One of the fortress's standout features is the breathtaking panoramic views of Belgrade and the two rivers, especially during sunset. It’s a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike to pause and admire the scenery. The surrounding Kalemegdan Park adds a peaceful, green escape from the city’s hustle, with its shaded paths, gardens, and sculptures providing a tranquil atmosphere. The fortress is also home to several attractions, including the Military Museum, which showcases Serbia’s rich military history, and the Victor Monument, a symbol of the city’s resilience. Numerous cultural events and festivals are often held within its grounds, making it a lively spot year-round. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a place to relax, Belgrade Fortress offers an unforgettable experience that captures the spirit of Belgrade.

Belgrade Fortress, and the park around it which is well known in Belgrade as “Kalemegdan” or “Kalish” is a magnificent place that can take you back in centuries imaging major events which took place here or just enjoying serenity of calmness of now very peaceful place. It’s rare to see the park of this size in the city centre, which allows you to enjoy some piece of mind in the middle of the downtown hustle. It is a must see place in Belgrade and it’s free to visit. Only few particular museums and landmarks charge very small visitors fee, which is well worth invested money. Plan at least 1.5 hours to make a big circle on foot or even longer if you have time to sit down and enjoy the environment or magnificent sunset from place where monument “Pobednik” is located on junction of rivers Sava and Danube. Kalemegdan Park, split in two as the Great and Little Parks, was developed in the area that once was the town field within the Belgrade Fortress. Today residents often erroneously refer to the entire fortress as the Kalemegdan Fortress or just Kalemegdan, even though the park occupies the smaller part, especially of the historical fortress, and it is some two millennia younger. The fortress, including the Kalemegdan, represents a cultural monument of exceptional importance. Enjoy!

Belgrade fortress is a major cultural, historical and symbolic centre of Belgrade and all of Serbia. It's located on top of the hill, near the centre and surrounded by huge Kalemegdan park. It's definitely amazing to be able to freely walk around inside the fortifications, get a sense of its historical importance and learn about the turbulent past of this place. And there's lot to explore and see. The area is lined with various artillery guns and other weapons of different ages, which is quite interesting. On the contrary, I was a bit disappointed by multiple things. As one of the most important places in Serbia, I would not expect it to be this unmaintained in some of its parts (overgrown bushes, garbage and litter). Some market stalls in the area are selling postcards of Gavrilo Princip, who is generally considered responsible for setting off the Great War (WW1). In the area towards the Danube/Sava river, there are dangerously looking signs with "Walking in this area you risk your life", but there is no explanation why, the signs are damaged and there are lots of people walking there anyway. Despite all that, the fortress is still the most important must see location when visiting Belgrade.

Great place ! For sports , recreation, walking, meeting people! A lot of museums, a fortress full whit history! Located on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Sava river into the Danube. The Romans were the first to build a fort (castrum) at this site and in the late 1st century AD, it became HQ of the IV Flavian Legion. Over the centuries of sieges, battles and conquests, the fortress was repeatedly razed to the ground, rebuilt and restructured. It took on its present shape round the end of the 18th century, but again, the wars that followed swept away nearly all the buildings. Belgrade Fortress consists of Upper Town, Lower Town and Kalemegdan Park. Kalemegdan Park was created as late as the 19th century, on a plateau in front of the fortress, which had been cleared for centuries to allow for unobstructed view of the advancing enemy. The park is popular because of its many shady benches, random sculptures, art pavilion, Zoo, amusement park, souvenir vendors. It is the favourite haunt of chess players, squirrels and couples in love.

Belgrade Fortress is an absolute must-see if you’re in the city! The views of the Sava and Danube rivers are stunning, and there’s so much history to take in. The old walls, ruins, and open spaces make it a great place to wander around and explore. The surrounding Kalemegdan Park is perfect for a relaxing walk, and there are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. If you’re into history, the Military Museum inside the fortress is really interesting. There are also some cool statues and monuments around the area. It’s free to visit, which is great, and watching the sunset from here is absolutely amazing. Just keep in mind that some of the paths can be uneven, so it’s good to wear comfy shoes. It can also get a bit crowded at times, but that doesn’t take away from how special the place is. Definitely a highlight of Belgrade!
