At more than 70 years old, The Labia Theatre is - according to its website - “the oldest Independent Art-Repertory Cinema in South Africa, showing the best of circuit, independent movies, foreign films, documentaries, classics and other alternative and art circuit films.” I’ve long known about The Labia but only recently visited for the first time. As movie theatres go, it is quite different, with a quirkiness that gives it a unique and Alice-in-Wonderland-like feel. You can tell it’s a theatre by creatives and for creatives or the arty at heart. I’m also impressed that it has lasted as long as it has, including surviving the Covid-19 lockdowns, which decimated the industry in our country. Two things struck me about the place as I walked in: the copious greenery and the bright and bold colours on the walls and fittings. Both these elements gave the impression of a place that is loved and well looked after by those responsible. Space is limited, and so the plants and bright paint also bring life and vibrancy into the space, and add to the ‘fantasy land’ feel of the place. The lobby is artfully decorated with movie memorabilia in the form of posters of old movies but also camera equipment from days gone by. In addition to the box office, there is a chocolate bar that also serves alcoholic drinks, a coffee shop and a pop up shop selling ladies’ clothing. The inside of the lobby is cramped but there is plenty of seating outside to enjoy a chat or drink - or both - while waiting for your movie to start. The selection of movies is as you would expect in an alternative cinema - a combination of current blockbusters, indie productions and documentaries. I liked the selection on offer at the time that I went, and enjoyed the movie I watched. It is advisable to book online otherwise you may have to wait to buy a ticket at the venue until the extent of the online sales has been determined. The theatre also caters for private functions and corporate events. Well worth checking out.

Intimate cinema spaces that make you feel like you're watching a movie with a group of friends in your living room. . .although they're all strangers who share a common interest in your good selection of movies. Get there early or you might miss a seat. The Labia Theatre gives off a rustic old school vibe that reminds us the beauty and excitement of going to watch a film in a theater. There's a sweet old lady who serves you popcorn and some slushies(alcoholic versions available) at the till. There's an outdoor courtyard where you can enjoy the various sweet treats they have to offer, coffee or tea as you wait for screening to start. Definitely worth the visit if you're nearby or looking to have a relaxed night on your travel itinerary. Perfect for cold evenings or summer days.

A dainty old fashioned movie house with affordable prices. Alcohol is served with your usual slushy or they also have a selection of wines and drinks to choose from. This place is greatly priced with almost everything being under R100. Cinema a little musty (unnoticeable once air on is on) but sound quality, and visual quality great despite the old fashioned traditional cinema aesthetic. I think the viewing room also differs with seat quality as some rooms have not yet been revamped. The seats don't have the cup and popcorn holders, and are a bit worn down. Also no seat numbers so first come first serve. They offer the spicing popcorn stations (you can put in as much spice as you'd like) which is unlike those weird small sachets that you get at the modern cinemas.

What a magical theatre experience, ogg orange street in Cape Town. Such a beautiful setting, lights up at night, with a very dazzling showcase of theatre at it's best. They have quite a few cinemas showing various movies... maybe romance, horror, documentary for every movie watcher. Takes you away from the normal mall cinema vibe. Away from the norm and breathe taking to say the least... old school ticket box where you purchase your tickets, which are little tickets 🎟 like back in the day... they serve hot and cold drinks, popcorn, snacks to keep your snacking at bay... Whatever you do, you need to try it out 👻

Why not try something different and instead of going to the mall to watch a movie, check out the Labia Theatre. It’s a great place to go out on a date, especially if you like artistic movies that you can’t normally see at the commercial cinema houses. Plus, you can also purchase alcoholic beverages, such as vodka slush puppies, which make your viewing experience even more enjoyable. The only thing is, it sometimes gets a little cramped on busier nights due to the small space, and there is a limited selection of movies available. However I’ve never had a bad experience there myself.

The visit to the Labia was wonderfully nostalgic after I visited there years ago when it was still an old beige color building with no vegetation in front and was a bit neglected. The decor is Fifties with brilliant rich jewel tones. Inside the theatre are soft crimson red velvet chairs and you feel as if you are temporarily transported back to this classic era when you walk in. Conveniently across the road is the excellent Italian restaurant Nonna Lina, where if you have booked in advance, you can round off your evening perfectly with delicious Italian faire!
