Aquarium — Attraction in Seoul

I have mixed feelings about these environments. I do like seeing the fish and pelagic dwellers but at the same time, I suffer for their enclosure.

If you only have one option, please visit the Coex Aquarium. It is much better organised and all the inhabitants are properly tagged in both Korean and English, so even foreigners can learn.

One of the things that I find awful about these places, and in particular this Aquarium, is the constant high ambient noise, from sounds and music. Even this stresses me out as a visitor I can only imagine and fear for the fish and animals locked up here. It must be terrible having this acoustic pollution constantly.

The other thing that breaks my heart, is that they have a beluga in captivity. Such an intelligent and social animal locked up in such a confined space. Apparently, there used to be 3, but 2 died from depression and tinnitus. We can only imagine the destiny of this last one if she is not released into the wild.

Long line-ups and over-crowded during Summer time. Avoid rainy days if you can as the crowd tends to be bigger when the weather not good outside.

The price is alright - but I recommend getting the express way ticket and pay the double the amount. At least that way you can try all the rides you want.

I used to visit here 35 years ago and it's basically the same. The food is horrible and the staff welcomes you with fake smiles and mono-tone voice. But there is something about this place that still speaks to you that brings you good memories...
