Casita-Museo de Ratón Pérez — Attraction in Madrid

We visited with our three children (ages 10, 9 and 7) after a visit to the Royal Palace.

Initially told the 5pm tour full so we were going to book for 6pm but it became clear we were English so we were allowed to go on our own as likely we don't speak enough Spanish to benefit from guided tour.

The museum is located in a sort of mini shopping arcade on the main road between Sol and Opera. It's easy to miss. We went up to the museum and one of the staff members spoke good English so showed us into the cartoon presentation (in Spanish but understood enough that we got the story) she also gave us a book with the English translation in to read too. We are then given a map (in English) to spot the key items as you move to the three rooms.

It's a very quirky museum full of legend about the tooth mouse and the children enjoyed clambering through the little tunnels and seeing if they started getting an itchy nose. We liked the biscuit tin room and the special post box and the tunnel where they found the special coins left for them.

I would say that at 5 euro per person it didn't feel like amazing value for a family of five BUT that said the children loved it and the member of staff engaged with them beautifully and helped us to find the mouse door out on the main road.

It’s an interesting idea, but there’s definitely some improvements that could be made.

1. In booking the tour, you’re obliged to have a back-and-forward WhatsApp exchange with an employee about the time. Surely this could be automated? Similarly, the tone of the WhatsApp messages is very patronising- they treat you like you lack basic comprehension skills e.g. “Be advised that the museum is in MADRID.” Yes. We know.
2. The staff member was clearly bored and uninterested and going through the motions. The tour started 10 minutes late (the bossy WhatsApp messages insisted we MUST be early), and, upon noticing that I had an accent, the staff member told me “The tour is in Spanish. It’s not in English.” I told her (in Spanish) that understood that, and that I can understand Spanish. I considered the conversation closed, but at the end of the tour, she again insisted on addressing me in English in front of everyone. I found this impolite, and bad customer service. In addition, she had a bored expression on her face the whole time, which was hardly fun for the kids.

Un lugar tal vez poco conocido por muchos madrileños pero no por eso menos importante. Totalmente recomendable para ir en familia con niños pequeños y también para aquellos que nunca han dejado de ser niños. Empiezo por su ubicación, la cual está en pleno centro de Madrid y nunca me había dado cuenta. Esta a dos minutos de la estación de sol literalmente. Cuesta 4 euros por persona la entrada, es un museo pequeño pero con mucho encanto, es un museo guiado completamente solo al final de la visita te dejan moverte a tu aire entre las tres habitaciones que tiene la visita. Es un sitio acogedor y con encanto, los guías lo hacen genial, y hay un montón de detalles por donde mires. Una de las cosas más especiales es ver la cara de los niños cuando están contando la historia del ratón Pérez y su trabajo y familia, son caras de todavía creer en la magia de perder un diente y encontrar dinero bajo tu almohada. Durante la visita tienen pasadizos hechos a tamaño infantil, donde pueden sentirse parte de la casa aún más. Puedes aprender el origen de la historia del ratón Pérez y sus diferentes figuras alrededor del mundo. Mezclado con la ilusión y fábula infantil.
