Segovia Bridge — Attraction in Madrid

Es el puente más antiguo del Madrid actual, cuyo nombre proviene de la ciudad donde se dirige su camino. Las obras de este puente renacentista dieron comienzo en 1574 y terminaron en 1584. Fue iniciado por provisión real de Felipe II, quien encarga el proyecto a Gaspar de la Vega y, al morir éste, a Juan de Herrera. Éste último interviene realizando un proyecto reformado a partir de los cimientos, por lo que se le ha de atribuir la autoría. A él se debe la traza horizontal de la rasante impuesta sobre la primitiva “medieval”, con coronación a dos vertientes. Construido con sillería de granito, el puente resuelve el cauce amplio de un río de poco caudal y profundidad, que en situación de avenidas ocupaba una amplia extensión. Consta de nueve ojos de arcos de medio punto. La anchura de los tres centrales es de 12 m, y la los laterales, simétricos, son decrecientes: 11, 10 y 9,4 m. Dispone de pilas con tajamares apuntados aguas arriba y de sección semicircular aguas abajo, coronados por sombreretes cónicos gallonados donde la anchura de las pilas centrales es de 6 m y la de las demás es de 5,8, 5 y 4,4 m. Tiene un aire severo y sólido, con un simple almohadillado de sillares. Cabe destacar la perfecta estereotomía, especialmente manifiesta en la articulación del tímpano con los tajamares. Es semejante a la del puente de Galapagar sobre el Guadarrama, proyectado también por Herrera por esas mismas fechas. El pretil se adorna con los característicos motivos herrerianos constituidos por bolas de piedra sobre basas cuadradas. Es, todavía en el siglo XXI, una de las mejores entradas...

The Segovia bridge was created back in 1574 by Juan de Herrera and is also right next to the ‘King bridge/bridge of the King’ which is right next to the Madrid River park (which is great for biking, walking, or walking with a pet/friend) which is quite long and connects to both bridges and is nicely designed and not a super long bridge so it’s quick to cross.

Once you cross you can also walk up towards the north (on the map) to the Door of San Vicente, Mall of Principe Pio then towards the east to the Gardens...
