La Seu – A Breathtaking Masterpiece of Light, Art, and History

Visiting La Seu in Palma de Mallorca was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The moment you approach from the Parc de la Mar, the cathedral rises dramatically against the skyline—its Gothic towers reflected in the water below. But it’s once you step inside that the real magic begins.

The interior is absolutely stunning: soaring vaulted ceilings, intricate columns, and a rose window so massive and colorful that it bathes the space in a kaleidoscope of light. It’s one of the largest Gothic rose windows in Europe, and when the sun hits just right, it feels spiritual—even if you’re not religious.

We were amazed by Antoni Gaudí’s touches throughout the space—his characteristic curves, light-inspired vision, and minimalist interventions make the ancient interior feel somehow modern and alive. The Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, redesigned by Miquel Barceló, was another surprise: a bold, ceramic mural filled with oceanic textures and biblical imagery. It was beautiful, raw, and completely unique in a cathedral setting.

The overall atmosphere was peaceful despite the visitors. There’s a deep sense of reverence inside the cathedral. We didn’t catch the famous “Spectacle of the Eight” (the rose window light phenomenon), but we’ll definitely plan to return for it—twice a year, the morning light creates a perfect reflection forming an ‘8’ shape on the opposite wall. It must be magical to witness.

We also appreciated the informative displays about the cathedral’s history and recent restoration efforts. It gave deeper meaning to what we were seeing.
