BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS !
During the morning hours, while the Jardines were quite empty, we were robbed by pickpockets here. As I just now read in the Google reviews, apparently we were not the first… We have travelled more dangerous areas in the world and consider ourselves somewhat „streetwise“, but they got us here… So please be extra-cautious!
THEIR METHOD: (appears to be the same as with the other victims before us in the Google reviews)
We (couple) suddenly felt „being hit by excrements from a bird“. Immediately a friendly looking „Señor“, who had been standing around with us taking pictures, came and „helped“ us cleaning our messy clothes, offering his water and paper towels and rubbing my spoiled trousers, while I took care of the dirt in my wife‘s hair. I am generally aware of such situations and immediately checked that my wallet and smartphone were still in place when „the friendly Señor“ suddenly claimed that the trousers were clean and he left. Only later I noticed that he was able to remove my wallet, take out all the cash, and put the wallet back in my pocket!
BTW: When we originally arrived in the park I had also noticed a second man, who was loitering around. I assume he was an accomplice, potentially the one who threw or squirted the „bird excrements“ on us, or assisted with the cash removal.
