This was a real gem of a place, with loads to see and do. The building itself is quite quirky with parts of it dating back to medieval times - lots of low doorways, beams and creaky floorboards! The layout is quite straight forward with a floor dedicated to paper making, then one to book binding, then printing and so on. There's a lot of interactive elements and it's a good place to bring children, as the paper making is ideal for them. Everything is in English, Italian, French and German, so we got by perfectly. The staff were all really friendly, helpful people, and we very much enjoyed our visit. I think that they could make more of the gift shop however, considering a lot of people like novelty stationery, there wasn't much there!

Fascinating, and well worth a few hours of anyone's time. In a former paper-mill, this museum has displays on four main floors, covering roughly: paper; writing, printing, and binding. There is a practical exercise on each floor (e.g. making a sheet of paper on the ground floor, writing a manuscript on the first floor, etc.) and demonstrations by helpful staff e.g. of calligraphy, and casting lead type for printing. If it sounds dull, be assured that it is all done with contemporary relevance, e.g. next to the toilets are displays of different kinds of toilet paper, and information about the differences between how Americans and Germans use it! (Americans crumple; Germans fold))

What a wonderful place we found in Basel! A paper mill museum, where we spent many fun hours, completely unexpected! Friendly staff, for the most part, except maybe for the ticket lady who let us wait at least ten minutes while she was on the phone chatting away. But the museum has so many different activities which are interesting for the adults and super fun for the kids! (Keep in mind that it might not be super easy with very young children and you’d have to keep them close so they don’t get hurt). Make your own paper from scratch, use quills, ink, make your own calendar and paper prints, postcards and marbled paper! Hours of fun and we will definitely come back again!

hidden in the small st. alban valley, situated at the end of st. alban canal you will find this cute museum, the basel paper mill (swiss museum for paper, writing and printing), in a 500 years old house. it tells the fascinating story of papermaking and bookprinting. this almost forgotten craftsmanship is brought back to life in a vivid and interactive way, making it even possible for visitors to try their hand at making paper. thats why the museum is also suitable for children. … realizing the numerous steps behind the process of papermaking and bookprinting will help you to understand the importance of johannes gutenbergs invention for europe.

This was such a great find If you want a greater understanding of the process of paper books printing and the evolution of those then this is place to go We got the opportunity to make a sheet of paper with a Basel water mark Also made marbled paper Saw the printing process and how it evolved All the different types of materials The whole experience is stunning and you need to dedicate a decent amount of time to fully appreciate this place The curio shop has so many interesting things to look at and purchase as unique souvenirs There is an on site eatery for those that need a coffee and a slice of tasty cake Truly well worth a visit

Very interesting place, worth a visit! Lots of displays of the history of paper and writing. You can make your own paper (takes about 15 mins for a group to make a page each), try writing with a quill (calligraphy examples to copy are provided) and seal a letter with wax plus lots of hand made paper/books and wax seals to buy as souvenirs. Demonstrations are in English, German and French. A good place to spend a few hours learning a lot about paper. The working water wheel outside is a good reminder thus was an actual paper mill back in the day, so lots of history here to soak up!
