Beitou is a district of Taipei. It is famous for many things as a part of Taiwan history: from local aborigin cultures to associations with Japanese explorers, President Chiang Kai-Shieh and his officers residences etc.
For tourists local and afar, the strong smell of sulfur is a claim of its famous hot springs and spas. The universities on or besides the Yangming mountain are well known for young men to sightsee "les belles".
For generations of youngsters, the Yangming mountain is famous as a dating ground. The New Year's Eve on The Mountain is an illustration of romantic must, and dating in one of the tea houses is a ritual.
You will find out more when you visit. I won't be surprised that someone eventually decides to prolong their visit to live there and then; some come back to visit regularly, or buy a holiday home or a home for retirement.

Read moreBeitou Park (北投溫泉親水公園) lies at the heart of the Beitou Hot Springs area, with most of the hot springs hotels, shops and restaurants around it.
The park is just across the street from MRT Xinbeitou station.
While this is a historic place - the first public bath in this area opened in 1913 - you will see hardly any historic buildings and I suggest you take a walking route through the park, not on the roads encircling it.
Probably the most interesting building in the park itself is the new public library (臺北市立圖書館北投分館;) by Taiwanese architecture firm Bio-Architecture Formosana.
