The Chinese Arch in Liverpool is a striking landmark that marks the entrance to Europe's oldest Chinese community. Located on Nelson Street in the heart of Liverpool's Chinatown, the arch stands as a symbol of cultural heritage and the enduring friendship between Liverpool and its twin city, Shanghai.
A Monumental Gateway Standing at 13.5 metres (approximately 44 feet), the Chinese Arch is the tallest of its kind outside mainland China. It features five roofs and is adorned with 200 hand-carved dragons—188 ordinary and 12 pregnant—which symbolize good fortune and prosperity. The structure is flanked by bronze lions and was constructed following Feng Shui principles to ensure harmony and positive energy for the surrounding community .
Construction and Design The arch was designed by Mr. Zhang of the South Linyi Garden Building Company in Shanghai. Its components were crafted in Shanghai and shipped to Liverpool in five large containers. In October 1999, a team of 20 skilled artisans from Shanghai, including stonemasons, carvers, painters, and engineers, assembled the arch in Liverpool.
