The Chinese Arch in Liverpool is a striking landmark that marks the entrance to Europe's oldest Chinese community. Located on Nelson Street in the heart of Liverpool's Chinatown, the arch stands as a symbol of cultural heritage and the enduring friendship between Liverpool and its twin city, Shanghai. A Monumental Gateway Standing at 13.5 metres (approximately 44 feet), the Chinese Arch is the tallest of its kind outside mainland China. It features five roofs and is adorned with 200 hand-carved dragons—188 ordinary and 12 pregnant—which symbolize good fortune and prosperity. The structure is flanked by bronze lions and was constructed following Feng Shui principles to ensure harmony and positive energy for the surrounding community . Construction and Design The arch was designed by Mr. Zhang of the South Linyi Garden Building Company in Shanghai. Its components were crafted in Shanghai and shipped to Liverpool in five large containers. In October 1999, a team of 20 skilled artisans from Shanghai, including stonemasons, carvers, painters, and engineers, assembled the arch in Liverpool. The construction was completed in just 90 days, culminating in its official unveiling in early 2000 to coincide with Chinese New Year celebrations .

The Chinese Arch in Liverpool stands as a vibrant symbol of the city’s rich multicultural heritage. Located in the heart of Chinatown, it is the largest Chinese arch outside of mainland China, soaring nearly 15 meters high. Adorned with over 200 hand-carved dragons and intricate gold detailing, the arch was a gift from Liverpool’s twin city, Shanghai. It marks the entrance to Europe’s oldest Chinese community and offers a striking photo opportunity for visitors. The surrounding area buzzes with authentic restaurants and cultural charm, making the arch not just a landmark, but a gateway to Liverpool’s enduring East Asian connections.

Liverpool is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe. The Chinese arch, outside of china is the largest in the world. It is guarded by two bronze Lions and there are two more Lions at the other end of the street. There are 200 dragons on the arch. It was a gift from shanghai in 2000. There are plenty of places to get good Chinese food in the area, and the arch is a popular and impressive tourist attraction.
