We recently took a leisurely walk from Camden Lock to Little Venice, and it turned out to be one of the most delightful ways to experience London’s hidden canals. Starting at the bustling Camden Market, we strolled along the Regent’s Canal, passing quirky canal-side cafés and vibrant street art. The walk was filled with the sounds of flowing water, distant chatter, and the occasional hum of a canal boat.
As we made our way further along, the scene transformed, becoming quieter and more picturesque. The canal boats, each with their own unique charm and colorful exteriors, lined the waterway, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. We especially loved seeing people living and working on these floating homes—they’re like little mobile communities!
Arriving at Little Venice was like stepping into another world. The canal splits into several branches, with even more boats, cozy waterside pubs, and charming walkways. We stopped at a canal-side café for a drink, soaking in the serene surroundings. It’s hard to believe this tranquil spot is just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of Camden.

It’s the ideal lazy Sunday afternoon social activity with a steady stream of families, friends and couples sharing the journey. Little Venice to Camden market is around 5km; making it a leisurely and delightfully varied 90 minute walk.
Although there is a fair stretch where you need to venture roadside before making your way back down to the towpath (this detour is not well marked). Those few minutes aside, as this stretch of London’s canal system isn’t much of a thoroughfare between key points, it’s also not much of a cycle route. This makes for a far more pleasant and safe experience for pedestrians.
We spent a truly lovely few hours walking and taking, photographing the ducks and ducklings, watching the barges and boats go by as well as taking a pause or two to enjoy the sun and ample greenery. There are several stretches where there is neither sign nor sound of the sprawling city: merely water, trees and sky. Some sights to note along the journey include moored communities, some impressive buildings, beautiful weeping willows and intricate...

Nestled quietly behind Paddington Station, Little Venice feels like a secret whispered by the city—a tranquil pocket where London slows its pace and trades traffic for rippling water and moored houseboats. Whether you arrive via a gentle 10-minute walk from the station or float in aboard the London Waterbus A, the transition is striking: from urban bustle to leafy calm.
The area is a confluence of the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals, lined with elegant Regency townhouses, waterside cafés, and charming pubs. It’s ideal for a contemplative stroll, a romantic wander, or even a canal cruise to Camden Market. Highlights include the floating Puppet Theatre Barge —a whimsical touch that adds to the area’s storybook charm.
