This is one of those places that relies on location, and pretends to be something it really isn't. It is over-priced, and the food lacks finesse. I had the battered haddock, and I have had much better fish and chips in my local pub. The difference is that this cost £22 rather than £14. For the most part, everything is deep fried. The batter was about a cm thick and had clearly been made with no love at all. Dropped into the deep fat frier and left. It was still doughy inside. The real joke was the size of the mushy peas. It came in one of those tiny ramekins you might get mustard in. Literally a couple of teaspoons. Just so you understand, Summerhouse chefs, mushy peas is NOT some sort of expensive truffle-esk thing. So don't try and make it one. Fish and chip shops have been serving it for years by the ladle. The waitress even asked when I ordered if I wanted an extra portion. I asked her why I should need an extra portion, but when it came, I realised. She did give me a second two teaspoonfuls. I am not even sure if this was maybe added as an extra onto my bill? The chips were not gourmet chips. They tasted like, and had the same consistency as, McCann oven chips - nothing special. On my way out, I looked over at the kitchen. 'Chefs' standing around with their hands on their hips watching a bubbling deep fat frier, and amazingly a frying pan. Real chefs move and do not leave a frying pan on its own when flash-frying. The waiter took our wine away without checking that there was still some left in the bottle. I don't think that the sauces were not home made. They certainly didnt taste as if they were, and the alioli didn't taste of garlic at all. I think my tartar sauce was out of a jar. For this price, condiment should be freshly prepared and made in the kitchen.
The view was nice, on the canal. Places like this make you realise what value really good restaurants are. An example of this might be Rick Steins in Barnes. I am not advertising, but it is primarily a fish restaurant of a comparative price point. Eat there, and then make your own mind up. Basically,...
Read moreI booked this reservation well ahead because I am in American visiting London for the first time. I booked my reservation for 245pm And the grace period ran until 3:00 PM. Since I was coming directly from the airport, my Uber wasn't going to arrive until 3:05 PM, so I called ahead and let them know that I was going to be running late. The male host over the phone told me that the kitchen closed at 3:00 PM for an Event/for clean up before dinner. I told him that I was going to arrive at 3:05 and I asked if I could put in my order over the phone. He rudely said “if you insist.” I hung up the phone to try to collect orders from my friends to call him back. A friend who was traveling separately, was able to get there at 2:45 so he put in the order for us instead.
When he got there, he told me that everyone, All the servers and hosts Were delightful! The drinks were wonderful, and the food was great! We were not rushed or anything! But I was very confused as to why the host over the phone was so angry with me over the phone. After thinking about it, Though it’s true that it is my fault to arrive late. I don’t think that the restaurant should allow patrons to make a reservation at 2:45 with a grace period until 3 o’clock if the kitchen closes at three. If I were to arrive at 3 o’clock, were they just going to tell me that I couldn’t order at all?
All in all, aside from that unfortunate experience over the phone, and the situation with the kitchen closing, everything was wonderful. The restaurant was gorgeous, the food was delicious, and the drinks were very good.!
We got the risotto which was delicious, but there was no protein by the way if you usually expect one with that,The Seabass with green beans, which was particularly delicious, The burrata, which was a standard Burrata, and the fish and chips, which were good as usual! Everything was on the price your side, but I think the view and ambience kind of makes up for it ! We spent about 350 pounds for...
Read moreAfternoon,
I have been summer house a couple of times now and thought it would be a nice place to take my girlfriend for her birthday meal as she’s never been. I emailed and called to let you "Summer House" know of the special occasion and asked if at all possible to have a table by the canal and a small Birthday dessert at the end of the meal. They agreed to this and said I can see the note on our system this won’t be a problem at all.
I arrive on Saturday at 6.30pm on time and we was greeted with a older chap who just said Name.... I told him Adam Theobald and he said “fine” ordered one of the waiters to take me to the table. I politely asked him, as requested do we have a table next to the canal. He responded “No it’s too busy and I can’t give you a table there but you are going be next row in” This took me by surprise and we just followed the waiter over to the table.
We had a couple cocktails each to start the meal and before we knew it, I was asked, more like told what do you want off the menu?
The whole time during the meal we felt rushed. My girlfriend had the grilled swordfish on ciabatta bread with wasabi mayo, but no mango salsa came. We didn’t make a fuss about this because my girlfriend really enjoyed the fish.
We decided against a pudding as I thought they would be bringing out a little something as I requested. This wasn’t the case and in the end after finishing another cocktail I decided to ask for the bill.
I am a little disheartened from the service and how the managerial staff on the night go about this.
I’m hoping from this email, I get at least a response from the restaurant stating the reasons above as to why I wasn’t treated they way I have been the last few visits...
