One of the last giant cantilever cranes built on the Clyde. Specifically designed for carrying huge engines and locomotives for loading onto ships and transport across the British Empire. The design was copied across the world. As many as 30,000 locomotives were produced in Springburn and carried through the streets of Glasgow by Clydesdale horse, train and engines on specially built rails. Glasgow was the premier creator of engines and ships in both technology, quantity and quality at the time. The surrounding areas on both sides of the Clyde were once huge docks for building, loading and repairing ships. Much of the surrounding buildings, warehouses and neighbourhoods were destroyed and the rubble used to fill in the docks.

The Finnieston Crane doesnt look out of place in a much developed area ,the Crane is a symbol of lost industrial heritage but now surrounded by the SECC , Armadillo and the new hotels being built in Finnieston its a part of Glasgows Clydeside landscape

What is there to say, it's a massive crane and it looks pretty cool. If you're into that sort of stuff then worth having a visit, pretty massive in real life and a good example of good engineering with a good history behind it.

Fascinating piece of industrial history. Would pay big money to be allowed to the top for a closer look. We should be raising money to restore it to operational condition.

Representing the history and past of GLASGOW, people can see it from a distance. In addition to being a historical site, it can also be used as a landmark when walking.

I couldn't get near the crane due to the climate conference, the Riverside walkway was closed by police. It was also raining heavily. I managed to get a photo.

Description
The Finnieston Crane or Stobcross Crane is a disused giant cantilever crane in the centre of Glasgow, Scotland. It is no longer operational, but is retained as a symbol of the city's engineering heritage. The crane was used for loading cargo, in particular steam locomotives, onto ships to be exported around the world.
