Kat’s Cafe is a great hub for artists. I attended Wish Wednesday open mic for spoken word on 10/3/19.
DIVERSITY
As compared to Urban Grind, there was not much diversity - 48 African-American guests and two white girls, I’m one of them.
Urban Grind has all-inclusive audience of all colors and ages and I like that, so hopefully we can see Kat’s Cafe evolve as well.
LOCATION
The cafe is a house. It’s located in a dark parking lot, no lighting, and people smoking stuff hang out there on the parking lot in front of the cafe. As I was parking and getting out, dudes whistled at me, so that was weird. I’d like to see some lights there. I feel safe going to Urban Grind and no one whistles at me there.
ATMOSPHERE
From the moment I walked in, GREY, the MC, made me feel at home: his smile and friendliness were just what I needed after the parking lot experience. It’s chill there, nice soft white lights, curtains, very home-like atmosphere. The crowd was joyful and responsive. I loved the stage, the music, and the layout. The equipment worked 100%. I witnessed other places how it is a challenge often.
FOOD
I loved the food. The server was very very friendly and attentive. I liked absolutely everything I ate. Price was great as well.
MUSIC
Musicians there were so funny! I enjoyed everyone. Music was loud for me because I set upfront. I loved GREY’s singing, and overall, everyone had fun, including me. I went there by myself.
POETRY
My poetry is Christian and deep. I know what I performed was a shocker but the audience was extremely welcoming and appreciative. They also helped me film my poem and it’s on YouTube now at YouTube . com / AnnaSzaboJDMBA
I spoke for free - that’s the rule for the first 10 performers, otherwise it’s $7 cover you pay to Speak.
You get 6 min, so if your one piece is 6 min, you do one piece, if your pieces are short, the 6 min are all yours.
I think it’s a great place to check out, even if you’re white. I was the only white person there after the other girl poet left and I felt welcome.
I’m going to an Asian cafe tomorrow to see who attends there. Kat’s cafe is a good place for poetry and they have...
Read moreFirst off, let me just say I wish I could rate 0 stars. Kat’s Cafe and their squad will NEVER be TRUE stars. Now let’s get into my experience. From observation none of the artists that performed before me were truly engaging the audience, yet the host b** gave them respect by addressing them as their artist name and not interrupting or assisting unless the artist asked her to. Nor did she cut anyone else off before their 3 minutes were up, she in fact let the WORST singer of the event get an extra 3 minutes.
The host b** gave me NO respect. I wrote with CLEAR letters on the sign in sheet that my stage name is Shiloh The UNIVERSE. When she called me on stage, she only said Shiloh. Throughout my song the sound team kept cutting my mic on and off which threw off my vibe, yet and still the crowd was vibing to my song more than they did for the other performers. And this was a new song they never heard which I sang ACAPELLA vs the other performers singing songs from Uncle’s “SummerJamz ‘08 CD.” that everyone already knew. Then she has the nerve to end my three minutes early while I’m transitioning into part 2 of my song. The way she acted was so off while I performed that even the audience had that look like “why did she stop him? I was just getting into it!”
Kat’s Cafe the audience comes first, whatever their vibing to most should be what you care about, not whatever reasons behind you DELIBERATELY DISRESPECTING me.
You don’t have to worry about me performing at this weak a**, cramped stage, outdated music playing, lame Omega Sci Fi veterans 60 years old feeling on young women clearly expressing disinterest having, A.M.E church tambourine playing… GIVE IT A REST.
Artists this is not the venue for your music to shine.
Oh and I forgot to add that I performed a cappella at Kat’s Cafe because they recently changed their OPEN Mic rules to “no tracks.” Are you f** kidding me?
F* Y,
Shiloh The...
Read moreWe visited Kats Cafe on lastnight, sad to say that it was a total disappointment. The greatest experience was the courtesy of the valet parker. We arrived at 7:30pm for an 8pm reservation. Was informed by the next appropriate worker a black male at the door to have a sit at the bar, and he will inform us of our sitting at 8pm after the spoken word which currently was taking place. The show went 15 minutes over. As we were waiting several customers were arriving for the 8pm show and informed to wait inside or outside. Would you believe that after they had let everyone leave from the earlier show, they set several customers who had arrived afterward before sitting us at a horrible table. When I say horrible, its honestly an under statement. The table was wobbly and small, the chair was wobbly. Now comes the impolite waitest, never was offered water, the pizza was terrible, food selection very limited, after receiving our food and drinks the waiter never returned again to check on us. How can you be the owner, Kat herself walked around never acknowledging the guest, never displaying a pleasant smile of warm welcoming. The only warmth received was, the place was packed wall to wall and desert hot!!! The performer jokingly stated, does anyone need to use my fan? The table that we set at was a few inches larger then our pizza tray, drinks, napkins, and water could barely fit. Needless to say, first and last.
