INCREDIBLE!! We had an absolute BLAST! Sydney was our amazing guide! She is so knowledgeable about not only the history of every location but also the hauntings! We had quite a few experiences on our tour! Driving around town in a haunted hearse was cool enough as is and would recommend this tour on that alone!
So, I'm going to start at the Driscoll Hotel where we felt the man at the bar walking next to us by the elevator. I also was locked into the restroom stall when I used the bathroom by the elevators by the bar. If you haven't been in the bathroom, the lock on the door is a manuel hook type latch. The door felt like it was being kept shut by someone on the other side pushing the door so I couldn't get out. I had to really use my body weight and push my shoulder into it to get it open. Once I got it opened, I was a bit skeptical because I'm trying to think logically like the door is just too snug in the frame and just stuck like I thought. I was terribly wrong because when I shut myself back in the stall I was using, I DID NOT have a problem with the door opening again.
The Clay Pit has amazing food, so I recommend grabbing an appetizer and a $3 Mimosa while you're there! When we were downstairs in the basement, Sydney was telling us about April, her history, and the tunnels, I was tapped on my wrist like someone gently trying to get my attention. Seeing as only Sydney, my friend, and myself are the only people on the tour and they are standing in front of me I know it wasn't them so I mentioned it to Sydney. But while we were in the basement talking about April's story and Sydney tells about Mr. Dowdy (I may be spelling that wrong) killing April and every time she spoke about him the lights were flickering and going almost out and then slowly going back to regular brightness. We got bring out a spirit box and talk to April in the basement and April called out Sydney's name over the spirit box 3 times in a row when Sydney asked if April knew who she was! We also got to use the spirit box on the 2nd floor where Mr. Dowdy came through over the spirit box as well as what sounded like a child came through too!
I would do...
Read moreI'm leaving my review a bit late due to family illness. We booked a hearse tour with Matthew at the end of February and our family of 4 had a BLAST! NOW that being said, we got an old white hearse that was converted with a stunning skeleton riding shotgun. Matthew was both informative and entertaining! He did warn us in the beginning, that if the vehicle didn't start, he was prepared. It did start, even though a few times were touch and go. That being said, I booked this for an ADVENTURE, and was not disappointed. We had ghost stories, we had photo opportunities, we had creepy attics and houses... they really delivered well! While this isn't the ghost hunting with equipment etc, this is one with ALL of the stories and question and answer time! I will say that if you have an adventurer with any disabilities, maybe not to choose this particular event, because the four of us did crawl into the BACK of the converted hearse and it wasn't limousine luxury. But hubby and teen grandson found a random skeleton hand back by the back window, and made the city of Austin happy laughing and waving back! We learned some Austin history, met a new couple on a date, and had some spooky tales. I even think that I captured a mist apparition in a window. If you go to this event with the right adventure spirit in mind, you won't be disappointed. If you think you'll be riding in luxury, and not walking, you might be disappointed. Don't be disappointed. Be enlightened, and definitely ask for Matthew. He's both just a bit quirky and way cool, just like...
Read moreBest way to get your first taste of Austin! Our guide was Loretta and she was amazing - super knowledgeable, great story teller, and excellent at picking up on our groups' vibe and adapting to us.
We did the private hearse tour with a group of 3.
The hearse is an awesome way to get around from site to site. It's not at all comfortable, but it sure is a blast popping around haunted locations in such a unique vehicle. Certainly worth the experience, although if you have any accessibility or comfort concerns, the hearse is not designed with passenger comfort in mind - I'm going to go ahead and guess that the previous passengers never really voiced any complaints.
Haunted ATX has arrangements with the stops on the tour, so you'll be able to see and access parts of the location that are normally off-limits to regular patrons. Loretta gave us a great combination of the history of Austin and of course lots of good ghost stories. We're pretty new to the area and I learned a lot of quirky things about Austin that aren't the usual tourist details.
A ghost tour is a very fun and entertaining way to explore a city and Haunted ATX delivers both on the entertainment and educational fronts. They are BYOB and allow alcohol consumption on the tour (several of the stops serve alcohol, so you'll have a chance to booze up even if you didn't bring anything with you). Loretta also had a nice little selection of water and soft drinks stationed for us in the hearse.
Bring along an open mind and a couple of drinks and have a...
