Behind the scenes of the OZ production at the Bastrop Opera House was such a huge disappointment. Executive Director, Lisa Halcomb lacks professionalism, clarity in her communication, reciprocal commitment and or consideration of the youth cast commitments and created an unwelcoming environment. During the 2022 OZ production Lisa asked the youth cast (ages 6-12) to make numerous adjustments to the original commitment she had the youth cast sign and show up for. The rehearsal times all changed from the anticipated 5:30-6:30 time to a start time of 7pm- end times of 9-10pm, thus keeping the kids up to accommodate, extremely late, all on school nights. She then asked to add an additional show date after the show started selling out. We (inconveniently) accommodated all request. Our daughter was very excited to be in the production and was committed, so we made it work. We brought in and purchased a combined min of $400 in ticket sales. We hyped the show. After the first weekend of shows we found out and informed Lisa that our daughter, who had one line, would not be attending the last fri show, bc of a prev commitment that had a tbd date, which ended up landing on the same fri time and date. Lisa asked me to reconsider bc it “wasn't fair” to the other cast.. and we did give it a lot of further consideration. We considered the entire situation and context of it all felt confident we would be supported in this decision and that our child's particular part could be filled with ease and that the other youth cast would have had zero issues doing so. We confirm our decision to Lisa and instead of having a verbal discussion to discuss any further she text me the week before the last weekend of shows telling me to tell our 8 year old child (who she refused to even spell her name correctly after being corrected) that she “didn't need to attend the final weekend of shows” at all. She just kicked her out of the remaining shows! It was never presented to us that there was no flex for show dates before she removed her. These remaining shows we had even explained to Lisa we had purchased tickets for her teachers to come and support her and she was super excited to preform in. When I asked Lisa to please have more consideration of the matter for our child's experience in the theater and numerous accommodations we made for her, Lisa then lectured me about not understanding how theater works and or commitment! Lisa then removed me from the cast FB group (for whatever reason) and didn't include us in any more notifications, such as the cast afterparty (she said we were “welcome” to attend.. yet had no info on the details do so) and or send us the video of the show they said they would record and send out. Its a non profit, so I reached out to the boards President asking to speak to the full board on the concerns and experience I had. I had hoped to discuss and give feedback to prevent such predicaments in the future. The board President & VP tell me i have to submit a letter to request to speak on the issues. I did. A week after the meeting and no one gets back to me so i touch base and ask for an update. Pres Debbie Denny then responds to me via her Media Solutions business email (not Bastrop Opera House) that the exec board discussed my issues, spoke to their attorney and support Lisa. She them tells me to contact their attorney Joe Tuck (also a board member) for anything further? The exec board didn't even agree to hear my actual concerns (the letter just asked to present my concerns), yet somehow this board discussed and decided to support Lisa? In no way could this exec board have made an educated decision to the concerns. I find this approach to be negligent & to reflect poorly on the ethics and values of the Bastrop Opera House. This was our first experience at the Bastrop Opera House and will be our last!
The Bastrop Opera House website claims a commitment to youth, cast .. and strong support. Yet my experience was that the integrity of this statement is lacking under the current exec board and...
Read moreBastrop Opera House continues to put on incredible community theater and in out experience, being in the cast and crew of numerous shows, has been nothing but positive. Lisa Holcomb, the Executive director, is absolutely wonderful. She is very kind and fair, and she is absolutely superb working with busy families and child actors! My kids, (two of whom who are now getting professional musical theater roles at ages 10 & 12!) all got their start at BOH under the direction of Lisa H and I HIGHLY recommend their youth theater programs! She and Dustin B have taught me kids SO much! And they've been nothing but kind and loving and supportive of them for the past 5 years. Cannot recommend them highly enough! We drive from 40 min away to continue to have our family involved here because it is such an excellent place, and specifically because these people are wonderful to work with and be...
Read moreWell, cabaret, it isn't! Quality dinner,it isn't! If your idea of cabaret is meeting with the elder ladies in the local church group on a Sunday night to sing some love songs then this is for you. If you're looking for some Valentine cabaret AKA singing dancing and sexy vibes this is not what you will find. It's a total bore! Food cold, food served on plastic plates, plastic utensils, plastic cups and serve yourself from the commissary line in prison is what it felt like, literally you get your plate from a lady in a window. This evening was the furthest thing from I imagine based on what was advertised. I can honestly say, I want a refund and maybe I should have been paid to participate in this middle school level production. I cannot believe I chose this over the super...
