Benton IL, Historic Jail Museum — Attraction in Benton

07/13/2024 We went on the weekend, and did a self guided tour. Admission was $5 a person. They do have guided tours that need set up in advance. It is definitely worth the price of admission. There are so many things to see and read about. It is more than just the place where Charlie Birger spent the last part of his life. It is taking a step back in time in Southern Illinois history. Everything is well marked and displayed very well. You are able to walk through the old jail, see the old radio station that was once housed there. I have tried calling all the numbers I have found online to try to find out about the escape room and it just rings, My family came up there right before 2 to at least Check out the museum part and it was closed, when the hours said open online, we would love to check it out but it seems hard to know when you can go. Updated info online...

Online it states that they open at 8:30. They have a sign on the store stating that they open at 8:30. We showed up at 9:30 and they were closed. There was no sign indicating that there was any particular reason why they were closed. My husband and I had some time to kill in the area and were looking forward to checking it...
