Bulldog is a Great Tour company. I did 4 tours in a week while traveling to Charleston for the first time. I'll be brief but please read:
Abstract: Other companies tours were closed in the evening and I wanted to see history. Bulldog Tours provided what others couldn't! You will receive American and local history, and you will receive paranormal history, with great Guides.
USS Yorktown tour: "Great tour with Bruce Orr." Bruce had a wealth of knowledge about the ship and its history he incorporated the history i came to hear with the paranormal accounts reported. I'm not sure if i saw any ghosts. I did get a creepy picture that has me interested but I may just be making it up because I want to see it ("buck fever"). I did get a headache and was nautious in a room outside of the officer's quarters. Regardless of ghosts i came to see history and I got exactly what I wanted and surprisingly more than I knew i wanted.
90 minute Dungeon Tour: If Disney's Elsa was a real person she would be Darian. I had a unique experience of getting a historical ghost tour from a Disney Princess (you'll understand when you book your tour with her). Her ability to tell stories is remarkable. TOUR INFO: (15 minute walk to the dungeon) Darian did a fantastic job of sharing the pirate history in the dungeon and allowed us to walk around the area freely (about 20-30 minutes). Walked to 3 other historical buildings that i wasn't expecting (45 minutes). The historical accounts, both local and paranormal, that were told excited me more than the dungeon itself, though the dungeon was far creepier, i had nothing that indicated paranormal. ADVICE: 1. Get Darian 2. Parking is across the street from the business in a private lot that is $7 an hour.
(45 minute) Jail tour: Sarah was a great tour guide. Her account of events seemed fantastic but very believable. I personally was genuinely concerned that I would bring a ghost or mollevalent thing home with me. I read several reviews that people were upset about not being able to explore the upstairs, but i have nothing to compare this to. I will say, I left scared, I felt phantom breaths and touching that were probably just air conditioning breezes but Sarah had me concerned enough to make sure I prayed before leaving this place of intense and brutal deaths. ADVICE: Arrive early to get a street parking spot. I was concerned I'd get my car towed and I'd have to walk to my hotel with a ghost buddy. Don't bring your kids, this isn't that kind of tour.
(2 hour) USS Yorktown paranormal investigation: Dustin was selfless, humble, and knowledgable. I went in knowing nothing and came out less skeptical. The "tour" was more self guided to allow your own personal investigation. However, i knew nothing. Dustin took the time to explain all the tools, and saw i was overwhelmed and hooked me up. I dont want to say there was a lot of paranormal activity but there was some good and odd conversations and glowing meters, at one point my left hand and left side of my face felt like they were in a freezer. When the cold ceased the hair on my neck stood up. There was no breeze or AC in this area. I caught a clear disembodied voice on my phone that sounded like it said, "seaman."
Ive tried to capture these events as quick and concise as possible. I've never had any intentions of going on a ghost tour, but when your goal is to see history and everything is closed but Bulldog Tours, then you go where things are provided.
I booked 4 tours this week with this company and it was all...
Read moreI hate to say this but the ghost tour we had was a major disappointment. We are Charleston Natives and have gone on various Bulldog tours through years with friends and family- graveyard, dungeon, and I believe at one point a red light district one was offered. All were great in the past. Last night (Saturday 6/28), we took our sons for their first ghost tour and the guide along with the stories left us underwhelmed.
1- The entire presentation of the tour was as if it was being recited from a history book. There was no build up in story or change in tone.
2- It took for 45 minutes into to tour to say the ghost or spirit and then say they haunted the building. There was mentions of death and dying but never a direct story of haunting/ghost in dungeon. Yes, there was history telling. I had to check my ticket to ensure I signed us up for a ghost tour.
3- For an hour and a half tour there was a total of 5 stories. 2 of those didn't have a resemblance of ghost stories. In the past tours there were more stories- and more engaging stories.
4- The guide had very little interaction with group besides after each stop he would say okay-- 1 to 2 minutes for questions and pictures--but during presentation no- raise your hand, no answer this, and just not personable. I understand there is a schedule but it doesn't take long for a quick interaction.
The group by the end felt very bored. I'm assuming the guide felt this as well-- at the St. Phillip Church he did his farewell/end of tour speech-- and said he would wait around one to two minutes before headed back to the office if people wanted to walk back with him. Immediately after stating this a group spoke to him and he immediately walked down the street.
I wanted to tip him for at least giving us the tour. I love the service industry and they will always get a decent tip even if service isn't up to par-- but for the guide to state "ill be here for a minute or two if you want to talk /get direction/walk back with me" then just go is crazy.
Again, we have been with Bulldog Tours numerous times-- and would like to consider you in the future- but after last night it makes us...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of taking Bulldog Tours’ 10:30 pm tour of Charleston’s Old City Jail on July 3rd, and it was an unforgettable experience, largely thanks to our fantastic guide, Bruce Orr. From the moment we began, Bruce's passion for Charleston's rich history and his deep knowledge of the jail's past were evident.
Bruce skillfully wove together tales of the jail's infamous inmates like Lavinia Fisher- America’s first female serial killer, chilling ghost stories, and fascinating historical facts, creating an engaging and immersive narrative. His storytelling ability made the history come alive, and he kept our group captivated throughout the entire tour- with the exception of the two guests who became a little too overwhelmed during the section regarding sadistic torture which occurred on the premises, and had to exit early.
What truly set this tour apart was Bruce's attention to detail and his willingness to answer all our questions- especially from my exuberant young son who was full of comments and questions. Mr. Orr was approachable, friendly, and clearly enthusiastic about sharing his expertise. The way he described the jail's architecture, the conditions the prisoners endured, and the significant events that took place within its walls gave us a profound appreciation for this historical site.
This was my second trip through the jaiI- the last time about 15 years ago. I highly recommend the Charleston Old City Jail tour to anyone interested in history, true crime, or ghost stories. Bruce Orr's exceptional guidance made this tour a highlight of our trip...
