The Mary Jackson Gallery at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, features a permanent exhibition showcasing the artist’s incredible woven creations. "Mary Jackson, a 2008 MacArthur Foundation Fellow, is a nationally recognized practitioner of sweetgrass basketry. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Jackson learned the Lowcountry sweetgrass basket-coiling technique as a child and considers this traditional art form a symbol of her heritage. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Jackson’s *Cobra with Handle* is crafted from sweetgrass, bulrush, and pine needles, bound with strips of palmetto fiber. Sweetgrass baskets are coiled and shaped to create a variety of functional and decorative forms. The art of sweetgrass basket-making has been practiced by Charleston’s African American community for over 300 years. Originally brought from West Africa during the early days of slavery, sweetgrass basketry has been continuously produced since the 18th century and is considered one of the oldest African-derived art forms in the U.S. today. This tradition has been passed down through generations, preserving a connection to African heritage. Once regarded as a rural folk art, sweetgrass baskets now hold a place in contemporary collections and are widely exhibited in major museums nationwide. Over the years, the craft has evolved as practitioners adapt their techniques—introducing new forms and materials to appeal to modern audiences, while also responding to the decline of natural resources due to coastal development and environmental changes." @basketry #SweetgrassBasketry #AfricanAmericanArt #CharlestonHistory #TraditionalCrafts #GibbesMuseum #MacArthurFellow #FiberArt #CulturalHeritage

I highly recommend this gallery. We fell in love with some art in the window late on a Sunday and then we scheduled a time to view. The owner Chase was lovely and knowledgeable— we bought 3 pieces. They have art from artists around the world. It’s a standout in a city that has more art galleries per square mile than any other city in the US. I recommend calling to schedule an appointment since they have two locations.

My first Time in this gallery. I was overwhelmed with the selection of very fine artistry. Kate was so very helpful. I left with these 2 beautiful paintings.

Very nice gallery with many local and artists from the rest of the US. We had the gallery to ourselves with a very helpful gallery curator. They have all types of art media: metal sculpture, photography, paintings, lithographs, and small mixed media pieces. These pieces are quite nice, but of course not inexpensive. Great to browse especially if the weather is not cooperative or you're trying to get out of the crowds. It is in the upscale mall attached to the Charleston Place Hotel very close top FIG and...
