This is in regards to the Cheyenne Library Summer Reading Program. After spending hours reading, I took my daughters to the library today so that they could claim their reading prize for having read 25 books in less than two months.
One of the gifts was two gift cards for Chick-Fil-A which would allow them to get a breakfast sandwich and an ice cream cone. They also get one free DVD rental and a treat from the Coffee shop.
However, the other prize was that they were able to choose from a small selection of books in a side room. Needless to say, I was appalled as I browsed through EVERY single title that was available. The juvenile fiction as well as the teenage fiction selection was horrible. EVERY single book available was about demons, witchcraft, sexual overtones, or crass vulgarity.
I asked the staff at the Help Desk about this and was told that the selections were made based on what was popular. I told them that I felt that their selections would exclude a huge number of homeschoolers such as my girls. They said they would pass on my concerns, but this was a really disappointing outing for my girls who feel that they were not really rewarded for their hard efforts with another book that they could read.
In fact, another young person was browsing with their parent and made the same decision that NOT one book would be a wholesome read for their child.
Staff, it is a fair assumption that many parents may not care what is available for their children to read, but some parents like myself and my wife do care. I do not want them filling their head with things like this, especially at such a young age.
Please, please, offer a selection that also caters to the many homeschoolers that use your facilities. I deliberately chose two stars instead of one because they did like the other small gifts, but they were really after the extra book for...
Read moreLaramie county library near central Cheyenne is one of the town’s crowning achievements.
Outside: The building is stunning offering walls of windows, a giant playground is adjacent to the library, which is surrounded by large bronze statues. Parking is generous, including for handicap and motorcycles.
Inside: Spacious with lots of natural light was my first impression.
Large round kiosks abound through the library levels offering helpful information. And lots of signs explaining offerings and what’s on each of the 3 levels.
The children’s section has their own floor! Level 2.
The extensive offerings include attractively arranged shelves of books well-categorized in order and lots of shelf space to feature books open on top- making new ones and old favorites easy to scan. There’s a shelf area by the wall with child-level seating for kids and adults.
A back room features a carpet with toys and crafts. Part of the main floor features an indoor, interactive play structure right by the wall of glorious windows.
This review hasn’t even delved into the event offerings (pamphlet available on floor 1 by the check out section).
I noticed a wide array of available books, even early seen ones. The cleanliness of the library, plentiful availability of helpful staff, and and presentation of library books to enhance appeal and selection easily merits this as 5...
Read moreI had a study group that was meeting at 130 today. Well one of my group has kids and she needs to use the 2nd floor because they have kids activities. Also I need it because I have three kids that go in the teen section. Well we arrived a little early for my group and decided to get my college homework done before we meet at 130. My kids were behaving and I thought it would be OK to use the computers in the kid section because I had forgotten my laptop. The teen section that has computers all had teens being rowdy and I needed some peace doing myour homework. I worked for about an hour before I was harassed by one of the librarians. She asked if I had kids I said yea. She asked where and I said over there. I'm pretty sure she was racial profiling and I didn't appreciate being singled out. I had moved from being with my kids to the general area to do my homework. She apologized for affecting my work with her interruption but that's not the point. She and the other librarian should have more control over the teen section so others can work. They should also be more observant as I came in the kids area...
