My husband and I were going to picnic at a park down the street from here, but thanks to a swarm of sports fans attending Bengals Training Camp, we couldn't go to that park and had to find another. The International Friendship Park was a few minutes away, and it was our first visit.
Part of the parking lot is cut off, but there was enough parking, and that's considering that it was a Saturday afternoon and there were multiple joggers, dog walkers, cyclists, and a wedding party taking photos. Other than crisscrossing pathways, there are benches, trash cans, and a few odd structures to see. We picnicked close to the Castle of Air, which is the mirrored structure in the photos attached to this review. The park seems to be themed around various parts of the world, but it wasn't entirely clear why or what was unique about each section.
I should mention that the far left (if you're facing the river) part of the park seems unfinished. It's mostly unwieldy grass surrounding a worn pathway, and upon walking through it to the other side, we discovered a shaded area with a building that was reserved for some event. So the park does feel unfinished and a little exclusionary.
Overall, this was a decent park that provided my husband some opportunities for photography, but its theming isn't clear and it does seem to be grasping to find its own identity. Still, not a bad way to spend an hour or two if you love parks with paved places to...
Read moreThis park provides some nice views of the Ohio River, some history, some internationally-oriented designs, and a great place for a quiet walk.
I enjoyed walking through most of the park on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. Late that afternoon or early evening when I walked it, I encountered perhaps a dozen others who were walking various parts of the relatively long, but narrow park.
Its width is limited, since on one side of the park is the Ohio River, and on the other are a railroad track and street. Despite the nearby street, traffic noise was relatively minor.
I recommend persons in Cincinnati seeking a quiet walk along the Ohio River or a place to do some reflection, consider this area. For persons seeking a riverfront park with more activities, I would recommend Smale Park perhaps a mile or two west of the Theodore M. Berry International Friendship Park. A riverfront path connects the two parks and other riverfront parks in between them.
Part of the International Friendship park was closed due to some type of construction on the day I visited, but another path goes around the construction area to lead back into the park. This construction may be a sign of improvements to come. Due to this construction and what I perceived as a limited international orientation, the International Friendship Park seems to be a work-in-progress. But I think persons who happen to be in the riverfront area will enjoy walking...
Read moreThe Friendship Park Pavilion is a lovely event spot that features ceramic artworks by artists from each of Cincinnati's Sister Cities (in Kharkiv/Ukraine; Nancy/France; Gifu/Japan; Harare/Zimbabwe; New Taipei City/Taiwan; Munich/Germany; and LiuZhou/China. Google's representation of the Pavilion is dead wrong. They say it's closed. It's not. I'm on the advisory committee for the Friendship Park; we have regular events and meetings there. Also, do NOT trust Google Maps for the location. TOTALLY off base. Instead, look up Montgomery Inn Boathouse, then head east from there. The Pavilion is on the right at the next traffic light; minimal parking there but street parking is...
