I needed an assistive hearing device for the theater and I was directed to the house managers office. When I got there, it was empty and I waited for at least 5 minutes before I was able to get someone's assistance. The woman who helped me, while very pleasant, was unfamiliar with the equipment and ended up giving me a device that did not work. I was told there was no way to test it before the event started, so I didn't figure out it wasn't working until it had started and I was in my seat in the middle of the row. In order to exchange it for another (which may or may not have worked, I didn't have much hope at that point), I would have had to climb over people, leave the theater, find someone who could help me, and miss part of the event. Luckily, it was a fairly quiet theater and a very clear speaker, so I decided to just do the best I could without it. I'm sure I still missed some of what he said, but I managed to enjoy the event, though I had a pounding headache by the end from straining to try to catch every word.
It is inappropriate and irresponsible for the theater to let someone with no knowledge of the equipment hand out assistive devices. In this instance, it made my life more frustrating and difficult, but I was still able to enjoy most of the event. In another instance, it could have a bigger affect on someone's visit. I would think twice before attending another event there since despite the assurances on their website of providing assistance, the reality leaves much to be desired.
Addition: It has been more than two months since I contacted KeyBank about this incident, and I have not received any sort of acknowledgement from them or assurance that they will make more effort to provide adequate and functional assistive devices in the future (as they are required by law to do so). Having this issue ignored by them is more concerning than anything else. I feel for anyone with disabilities who attempts to obtain reasonable accommodations from...
Read moreI attended the evening of love and Soul concert and it had several artists there The Whispers The Dramatics and Howard Hewitt who sounded lost without Sharlamar but the person that stole the show was Angela Winbush she was very entertaining we sat in the mezzanine and even though we was able to see from that seat the Acoustics was not that great I don't know what was going on with the band but some of it sounded distorted and the seats was so close together it was really hard to get around it wasn't that much leg room especially for a tall person and we we was able to find something to eat before the doors opened the show was at 8:00 but the doors didn't open until 7:00 for the concession stand which didn't leave much time to have a drink and eat there so if you ever go to a show there make sure you eat something before you get there because a hour is not enough time to stand in line and get something to eat and drink because you can't take that to your seat so the best option is to find a restaurant within walking distance. Also try to purchase a parking pass online which was $18 and $20 the day of but prices may vary per event so try to purchase before any show because they fill up fast we decided to use the valet parking which is great because you just give them your car in front of the theater and let them park your car and bring it back after the show is over the only thing I didn't like about that is that one of the valet attendants was smoking in my friend's car which she does not allow any smoking her car but other than that it was very convenient and it only cost $40. I really enjoyed myself and hope you will too but make sure you arrive early especially when other events are going on the best thing to do is make a reservation because most restaurants might have a 45 minute...
Read moreI drove 3 hours from Detroit to see comedian Shane Gillis (the DAWG!) here last night. Shane and his openers were amazing as always but I was extremely disappointed in my experience with this theater.
The show was supposed to start at 7:00 p.m. and ended up starting at about 7:15 due to a large number of people still needing to be seated. Unfortunately, the ushers were still seating tons of people even an hour into the show. We missed almost all of the first and a good part of the second openers due to all of the talking and ushers walking groups of people back and forth in front of us. That basically continued throughout the whole show.
On top of that, we were seated near one of the entrances of the upper level and there were 4 ushers that were rustling trash bags and saying "trash, trash" every time someone would walk by them which was quite frequently. I certainly understand them trying to keep the theater clean but it was incredibly distracting.
I understand that the audience is partly to blame for all the distractions and noise because a shocking number of people showed up extremely late to the show. But ultimately it seems like it should be the responsibility of the theater to have a cutoff "doors closed" time where they stop admitting people into the show while the show is in progress. Obviously comedy shows are a little more loose than a play so maybe they only handle comedy shows this poorly. But if that was a play, I think a lot of the audience would be asking for a refund.
Great venue, beautiful theater, helpful staff, but seemingly no respect for the comedy...
