Grand Hyatt at SFO — Attraction in Millbrae

Holy moly. Where do I begin? After a very long day of flying, we entered the Hyatt lobby and there were several guests and another international flight crew ahead of us in line to check in. Before I could even think about attempting to complain about the painful wait that was before us. A gentleman from the front desk saw us, got our signed in and had us on our way to our rooms in less than 3 minutes. A+ for the hotel staff. They are always prompt and courteous.

The hotel rooms are absolutely phenomenal. The bathrooms are immaculate, spacious, and clean. I love the automatic floor lights to help me find my way around at night. Merely standing in the shower makes me feel like royalty, and sometimes I pause to wonder what foreign diplomats or movie stars have showered there before me. Same for the toilet. It’s just that nice.

The air conditioning is quiet, quick, and doesn’t come with child protection locks that prevent you from selecting the precise temperature for optimal sleep. And with the curtains closed, it is nearly black out dark in the there. Maybe 1 in 20 of our hotels can get this dark. You get a foam roller to use and a Nespresso coffee machine fully stocked and ready for action. My only complaint here is that the decaf pods are nearly the same color as the full caffeine pods. But oh well I love coffee all the same. Furthermore, I sleep like a baby here. I seriously pass out harder than my one year old son after a full day of playing in the sun. The bed is insanely comfortable, I love the pillows and comforter. Like I’m tempted to steal then, they’re that nice. I never would, but not one hotel ever has it even crossed my mind that it might be better than what I have at home. In addition, this might be the only hotel I know of, that is literally adjacent to a major airport and with the curtains closed you would never know there’s a 747 starting its engines 300 yards from you. I overheard another hotel patron literally screaming with amazement about how he arrived in the dark and had no idea the airport was right next door. I want all my hotels to be like this.

I also went to the gym before I left. It had lots of space and a wide array of very nice equipment, they even a stair master so I could tone up my baby cows a long day of flying. It’s on par with my local gym at home, no complaints.

Lastly, this hotel right off the train that connects to BART. It’s super easy to connect to anywhere in the Bay Area, or go grab dinner downtown in a reasonable amount of time. It’s literally like having Grand Central station in NY across the street from the hotel.

I seriously love this hotel, so much in fact that I will probably cry if and when we inevitably lose our contract with this hotel. Can’t have nice things, am I right? Honestly I’d probably try to move in they’d let me, but in the meantime this whole combination makes for the perfect home away from...

I’m spending approximately two(2) weeks at the newest Grand Hyatt @SFO hotel. It’s a destination in itself: 351 rooms with 22suites, LEEDS Gold in early 2020 with solar technologies, fully equipped gym with spa, Quail & Crane Asian/Californian/Western fusion restaurant. There’s a 24H Twin Craft Market (a grab & go) & Bar, 24H room service. Very few hotels in the US & the world have 24H room service. The Grand Hyatt@SFO is about professionalism, a customers first philosophy, going above & beyond what travelers normally expect. If you’re staying in the San Francisco Bay Area for a few hours, you can stay here as a “Day Traveler” if you’re not staying overnight: you’ll have access to what this hotel has to offer. The Grand Hyatt @SFO is a dedicated gateway to Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Oakland, Mountain View, the medical powerhouses of UCSF Medical Center, Stanford Hospital, Sutter Health, to name a few. They have their own AirTram station, just an escalator/elevator/stairs down one flight to the AirTram desk. It’s about locally sourced fresh foods, carefully chosen, meticulously prepared from scratch for Quail & Crane. A pictorial menu on a tablet greets the guest. At the Market & Bar, a variety of personal sized pizzas are baked in-house along with healthy salads, yogurt, fresh fruits & juices. Refrigerated cabinets hold wine & other beverages. Basic traveler needs are also sold at the Market at reasonable prices. A varied assortment of snacks are also available. There’s a barista who will craft your coffees & teas if you prefer not to use the in-room Nespresso machine. The business traveler is pampered with 8-fast USB ports & 8-AC sockets with an iHome radio sporting a Qi charger able to charge the largest smartphone & phablets. The rooms come standard with a Whirlpool dorm sized refrigerator with freezer, a smaller refrigerator, a Magic Chef microwave, a Hamilton Beach tea service with a built-in tray. There’s sensors: motion sensors in the bathroom turn on floor lights, beneath your bed (on both sides), a lit closet with a warm fluffy bathrobe. There’s a digital scale in the bathroom. What a superb hotel! This is a perfect case of state-of-the-art hospitality. This new hotel has been built from the ground up as a super-high-end traveler experience, and it hits the nail on the head. Unlike a resort (where the focus of the experience is "luxury for luxury's sake") the Grand Hyatt at SFO is impeccably designed and executed for the business and leisure traveler.

It starts with the location: not only is it directly on the airport proper, but the AirTrain from the terminals stops at the hotel and connects it directly with the BART commuter network. For those who like 'plane spotting', the East-facing hotel rooms directly overlook the SFO runways (and the rooms are even provided with binoculars for your viewing pleasure!)

The furnishings are brand new (2022), high-end, and perfectly appointed. The bathroom is luxurious, the outlets plentiful (including Qi chargers for your phone and USB power ports galore), and the bed and linens comfortable. The hotel restaurant and room service is available 24/7, a complimentary Nespresso coffee maker, fridge and 42" TV provide the comforts of home, and the furnishings (including work table, chairs, credenza, etc.) are functional, attractive, clean and effective.

I rarely wax poetic about hotels (especially airport ones!) but the developers/operators of the SFO Grand Hyatt have knocked the ball out of the park here. In fact, the only comparable experience I can think of is the new and iconic TWA Hotel in New York at JFK, built around the historic Aero Saarinnen-designed terminal.
