It's been about five months and I can finally wrap my head around my unpleasant experience in this store. Let me preface by saying I've been reselling clothes for a while, online and in yard sales, flea markets, etc, but I was under a time crunch and wanted to get rid of a big bag of stuff all at once. And I understood there was high to likely chance they wouldn't want most of my stuff, since a lot of it was winter clothing and we were just departing the season. I'd already made peace with that. No big deal. If they rejected everything, I wasn't too worried. I also wanted to shop for some spring things, so it was a two-birds, one-stone situation.
Ultimately the problems boil down to unhappy staff. They were brisk, overworked, snappy, and sarcastic. Like, I'm about as chill of a customer as anyone will ever get, rarely ask for help, and can commiserate with the retail grind. I am being 100% honest when I say that I did absolutely nothing to warrant being told the clothes I brought in are "just not fashionable." Which, by the way, is not an acceptable thing to tell someone who is holding an item to purchase. She said this to me in the full view of the entire store -- loudly. Like, loudly enough to turn a few heads, which I assume were other people as taken aback as I was that the staff would say something so rude. Even if it were true -- and maybe it is, I don't know, man. Fashion's subjective, frankly. Even if it were true, it's not an appropriate attitude to have with anyone. Ever. A simple, "Unfortunately, we didn't find anything we can pick up from you today," would have worked.
I was so embarrassed that I put the item I was planning to purchase back where I'd picked it up and walked out with my bag of unacceptable stuff.
I learned later on that most Buffalo Exchanges -- and maybe even this one, if its staff is having a better day -- will actually donate clothes that they don't purchase, if you'd like. I wasn't offered this service and would have accepted it happily, because I simply took my "unfashionable" clothes to Goodwill immediately after departing their store. It would have been great to save myself the trip, but.
Long story short, I have a feeling the employees of this Buffalo Exchange are overworked and underpaid and because many of them are young and perhaps inexperienced in customer service, their attitudes can be incredibly unacceptable. I wish I'd read reviews before visiting, because I likely would have skipped the clothes-reselling aspect and just went to shop instead. Unfortunately, my opinion has soured enough that I won't be returning, even if it's just to...
Read moreNeedless to say, I have had a couple of interesting experiences both selling items to Buffalo as well as shopping. I came to Buffalo Exchange with a bag of contemporary and popular brands like Vanessa Virginia, Maeve, and Tiny from Anthropologie; Free People, and some new Forever 21 pieces with tags. Averaging estimated MSRP prices roughly $300. The female associate who was working was not friendly, had a stand-offish demeanor, and also seemed to have condescendingly looked at my clothing with sheer judgement. I get it, Buffalo Exchange is located near Greenville and close to SMU, so they have to specify clothing items to attract the demographics for customers in order to create revenue;they need garments that would sell. Albeit, the associate took one Free People dress and a top from Forever 21 out of my bag of clothing, only to be granted $40 in cash and $60- and-something in store credit. $40 was a low ball offer, but I took it as I left it since I needed the extra cash.
Lo and behold, I went back the following week to shop - only to find my Free People dress on the racks being sold for 40% more than the offering price. I chuckled softly as I rummaged the racks of clothing, spotting simple Forever 21 pieces being sold for more than the suggested retail prices.
If you want a unique piece that you are not able to find in the store and have little patience to scavenge for one, then I guess this place can be your pot of gold? But this store is pathetically reselling prices that are higher ( and keep in mind "gently used') than the prices you would purchase brand new at H&M or Forever 21. There are some unique vintage pieces, I'll give them that, but some of their items are suspiciously priced gouged that it denotes their credibility as a "vintage" and "thift" shop. Places like these are for SMU trust fund babies that would buy anything that is "vintage" because the shop promises "vintage" and are too seemingly privileged to shop at Goodwill or Thrift Giant (I found a lot of Free People dresses from Thrift Giant for less than $5).
I would say it is better to buy your clothes when it is on sale than go here. Dillard's Clearance Center, Nordstrom Rack, and Poshmark would be the better option to find a bargain. I only give it another star because there is a really good coffee shop next...
Read moreLet me start off by saying that I have been a loyal customer for years. However I have noticed a concerning pattern in their poor business practices as well as watching really excellent staff come and go so quickly. I came to sell a while back (around September)and since then I have thought about my experience there and done some research into the company. I was excited to see that they had several protocols in place in order to sell. I made my appointment and brought in my quarantined 50 items and was excited about the idea of getting my payment through paypal. However I noticed that there was another seller that had come in without an appointment and clearly had not followed the quarantine process. I witnessed discomfort on the employee's face regarding the lack of quarantine and then I watched the buyer talk to their manager (The manager was short with natural hair and boots, I asked for her name...I believe it started with a J). The manager then made that buyer go through the clothing, they did not have gloves and they did not inform him about the need for appointments. I felt really uncomfortable because I trusted that they were taking the pandemic seriously, I did what I should have and their own management showed clear disregard for their employees as well as their customers because those clothes were not quarantined!! I was so shocked, I then did some research on the company and it turns out that the company has been outed for promoting rcism through their "loss prevention" tactics as well as having recently had a key business partner be outed for 20+ years of sxual misconduct. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE. YOU ARE SUPPORTING SUPPRSSION, RCISM AND SXUAL MISCONDUCT. These people are disusting and I hope that they take a good look at themselves. I have witnessed many talented employees at the Dallas location disappear over time. When I've asked about those people no longer being there I always get round about answers. It's like they're trying to cover everything up to save face. Don't support this company, I know I will...
