The shot tower is definitely worth a visit if you’re walking down the riverwalk or visiting the winery. We went right around sunset so I was able to get a few good pictures of the tower and the pretty sky. It’s an interesting little piece of history. I just assumed it was used to shoot from (shot tower) but learned it was actually for making ammunition. Someone would melt down lead from the highest Point in the tower then pour it into a bucket of water that was sitting on the ground below to cool it then they would collect the pieces for ammo. There’s a small fence all the way around so you can not go inside. It also looked like a construction site behind the tower so it probably would be best to go after 5 on weekdays or weekends to avoid the noise & traffic from construction crew coming & going. There were also some people that looked like they may have been up to no good when we were there, & with it being where it is, the people on the riverwalk aren’t able to see you so just be aware of your surroundings & don’t go alone. Especially after dark. There is also a really cool little lookout point if you walk up the stairs right across from the tower that’s worth checking out too! Great views of the tower, the bridges and the MS river.

So glad the city is preserving such an iconic piece of history! My mother made her first trip to Dubuque to visit us and was struck by the city's willingness to restore and repurpose Dubuques history! Most cities and out with the old in with the new. Dubuque has done an amazing job to make the old important and vital again! Shot tower is just one of the great examples of thier pride in their towns history!

This is a historic artifact from a much earlier time in Dubuque. It's basically just something to walk around and understand. There's a nice overlook of the river and railroad bridge on this side of the railroad tracks. From the North end of the Mississippi Riverwalk you need to walk down the stairs and under the bridge.

A very interesting piece of architecture, one that's been somewhat poorly treated in years past but has gotten an facelift in recent times. Outside of the historical plaque here there's not a lot to see here immediately but there's plenty of history that goes along with the building if you're willing to do a little research to find it out. If you need to know more check with the Dubuque...
